I would note exactly what I observed and recommend further evaluation by a qualified electrician. I am not an electrician, nor claim to be to my clients. I am sure an electrician will chime in soon with much more helpful information. I misread your post… before you pressed the test button on the receptacle, did the tester show correct wiring? Did the reset button work? Try it on a different GFCI outlet after tripping it.

When it comes to ground-fault circuit-interrupter , or GFCI, outlets, there is always a question as to how to connect the wires. This is because GFCIs have two different sets of terminals: the line terminals and the load terminals. When you connect only to the line terminals, the outlet provides GFCI protection only for itself. When you connect to both the line and the load terminals, the outlet protects itself and any additional outlets farther down on the same electrical circuit. Line and load connections refer to the wires that deliver power from the electrical source. The line refers to the device that carries power, while the load is the circuit where the power gets delivered to.
There could be a couple of reasons for this. If the outlet reading as open hot is connected to a switch, the switch could just be in the off position. An open hot aka as a dead outlet means a hot wire that should be energized has lost power or has come loose. Troubleshooting an open hot involves: Checking wall swithes to determine if the outlet is switch-operated. Checking for a tripped breaker inside the electrical panel box. That can also be caused by a tripped circuit breaker, so check the breakers and reset any that have tripped. The Causes of an Open Hot Usually an open hot results from a bad connection at a receptacle, switch, or light fixture.

Read on for must-know info on GFCIs—what they are, how they work, and where to install them. In your home, the flow of electricity is contained within wires covered with rubber- or plastic-based insulating material. When everything goes as planned, the electrical current runs safely through the insulated wires to switches and wall outlets and on to the many appliances and gadgets we take for granted today. A ground fault is the occurrence of electricity taking an unintended path to the ground.

My non-contact voltage tester shows the line coming into the outlet is hot, and the line going to the adjacent outlet is also hot. Is this true? Anyways for grins I tested the rear of the house outlet not the front that we have been discussing and power is fine it runs an electic drill. He worked as an electronic technician and later as an engineer for the IBM Corp. I'm beginning to think that for some reason the blades on the testor are not making contact in these style outlets which are the same and no others I've been placing it in when it works are of this manufacturer. If the circuit wiring does not contain a ground wire, the GFCI will not be affected and will operate as designed, but the outlet will not be grounded.
Updated on February 5, Electric power has become a massive part of our everyday activities. But what is an open hot, and how do you troubleshoot and fix an open hot?
