This optional architecture is optimized to exploit the full capabilities of the very latest in hardware. For more comparisons between the two architectures, see the post: Comparing the Original Storage Architecture to the vSAN 8 Express Storage Architectureas vsan as the lightboard video below, vsan. The OSA is the architecture that will be used for all in-place cluster upgrades, vsan, and new cluster installations using hardware that is not qualified for use with the ESA. The ESA can be used for vsan cluster installations using qualified hardware.

Virtual machines VMs need shared storage. Historically, it was SAN, providing shared storage to multiple hypervisor hosts.

A VSAN abstracts the storage-related operations from the physical storage layer , and provides shared storage access to the applications and virtual machines by combining the servers' local storage over a network into a single or multiple storage pools. The use of VSANs allows the isolation of traffic within specific portions of the network. If a problem occurs in one VSAN, that problem can be handled with a minimum of disruption to the rest of the network. VSANs can also be configured separately and independently. Different vendors have different requirements for the minimum number of nodes that participate in a resilient VSAN cluster. The minimum requirement is to have at least 2 for high availability. Data center operators can deploy VSANs in an all-flash environment or a hybrid configuration, where flash is only used at the caching layer, and traditional spinning disk storage is used everywhere else. All-flash VSANs are higher performing, but as of were more expensive than hybrid networks. A VSAN fills a similar role as physical SAN infrastructure, but is also used for workload virtualization which can include databases, virtual desktop infrastructure VDI environments, file servers, CRM systems , and other enterprise applications. VSANs can be used for remote branch office networks, using low-cost commodity hardware. There are also applications with DMZ , an isolated network that sits outside a company's firewall, and areas with space constraints, such as vessels, where a reduced hardware footprint node deployment has a better chance of fitting.
Therefore, vsan, data in the cache tier is not lost and does not need re-warmed. Components are just vsan implementation detail, and not a manageable entity in vSAN.

VMware vSAN provides enterprise-class storage that is robust, flexible, powerful, and easy to use. It provides abilities and integration that is unlike traditional three-tier architectures. While vSAN-powered clusters share many similarities to vSphere clusters in a three-tiered architecture, the unique abilities and architecture of vSAN means that some operational practices and recommendations may be different than that of traditional environments. This document provides concise, practical guidance in the day-to-day operations of vSAN-powered clusters. It augments the step-by-step instructions found in VMware Docs , KB articles , and other detailed guidance found core. This operations guide is not intended to be "how-to" documentation.

The success of vSAN can be attributed to many factors such as performance, flexibility, ease of use, robustness, and pace of innovation. Paradigms associated with traditional infrastructure deployment, operations, and maintenance include various disaggregated tools and often specialized skill sets. The hyperconverged approach of vSphere and vSAN simplifies these tasks using familiar tools to deploy, operate, and manage private-cloud infrastructure. A great fit for large and small deployments with options ranging from a 2-node cluster for small implementations to multiple clusters each with as many as 64 nodes—all centrally managed by vCenter Server. Whether you are a customer deploying traditional, or container-based applications, vSAN delivers developer-ready infrastructure, scales without compromise, simplifies operations, and management tasks as the best HCI solution today — and tomorrow. It abstracts and aggregates locally attached disks in a vSphere cluster to create a storage solution that can be provisioned and managed from vCenter and the vSphere Client.

For a standard vSAN cluster, a minimum of 3 hosts is required to configure file services. Disaggregated storage in vSAN uses a unique software-based approach to disaggregate, or decouple compute and storage resources. A cluster serving your workloads can easily be scaled out one host at a time, or even scaled up using more or higher density storage devices that can be purchased as a direct expense, as opposed to a large capital expenditure. As an example, consider a virtual disk that is GB. This enables administrators to deploy vCenter Server to a new environment where vSAN will be the only datastore. In order to take advantage of the full server-stack firmware management capabilities of vLCM, a server vendor plugin called a Hardware Support Manager HSM must be installed. Higher amounts of RAM are recommended depending on application requirements, VM-to-host consolidation ratio goals, and other factors. It would be inefficient and resource-intensive to begin rebuilding several gigabytes or terabytes of data when the host is offline briefly. This means there are two copies of the object with each copy on a separate host. Update firmware of all ESXi hosts in a cluster. Increased storage densities and new storage techniques can also place a burden in scaling metadata - the data about the data. In addition, when any change is made to a desired image, vLCM will automatically validate the image and check compliance. In a stretched cluster configuration, data can be mirrored across sites for redundancy.

By default, there are no reservations applied to the resource pool associated with the entities required for vSAN File Service. This simplifies the administration of an environment, especially at scale. A vSAN cluster supports any number of physical hosts from two up to a maximum of 64 hosts in a cluster. Minimum overhead means maximum performance. What type of cluster types and connectivity are supported with vSAN Max? Any host in the cluster can be used to view vSAN Health. For example, one will not need to adjust the stripe width storage policy rule in an attempt to achieve better performance. This helps avoid the challenges associated with stop-gap approaches such as storage-only nodes found with other solutions. The vSAN Stretched Cluster Bandwidth Sizing guide contains more information and recommendations specific to stretched clusters networking.
