But the real story was Vingegaard, the year-old from a fishing town in northern Denmark who is only the second rider from his nation to win the Tour de France. But Vingegaard responded quickly to each new assault, never faltering as the riders battled intense heat through the Massif Central. In the end it came down the Pyrenees, where Jumbo-Visma and UAE Team Emirates, each depleted due to the loss of key teammates, traded blows in the mountains. Not leaving anything to chance, he still finished second in the race against the clock on Stage 20, confirming once and for all that the strongest rider won the Tour de France. But more importantly, he learned valuable lessons about how to better gauge his efforts during a Grand Tour. Is it the best overall performance by a team in Tour history? It might be—at least in the modern era. But Jumbo-Visma is not a team that cares how it stacks-up against other teams in history—all that matters is that it finally won the Tour de France after several years of near-misses and heartbreak. Jumbo has absolutely dominated this Tour, with six stage wins from three different riders and taking home three of the four jersey classifications. The Belgian has now won nine Tour de France stages in four years, including time trials, field sprints, breakaways, uphill finishes, and mountain stages. He will also win his first green jersey, setting a record for the highest point total in that competition.

The Tour de France was the th edition of the Tour de France. This was the first Tour since in which each of the three podium finishers had made the podium on a previous occasion. The race began in Copenhagen before returning to France. Vingegaard defended and increased his lead through the Pyrenees and the final individual time trial to secure the victory. He thereby became the first Dane to win the Tour since Bjarne Riis in
In one of the few stages of this year's Tour de France with no real surprises, the final day of racing culminated with Jonas Vingegaard Jumbo-Visma winning the overall classification while Jasper Philipsen Alpecin-Deceuninck netted a second bunch sprint victory. The only sprinter to enjoy repeat victories in the Tour this year, Philipsen's second win of the race was preceded by Groenewegen's sustained drive up the left-hand side of the slightly rising finishing straight in France's most famous avenue. Groenewegen was seemingly helpless to prevent Philipsen from first shadowing and then easily overhauling him with a perfectly timed and ferociously steady acceleration in the centre of the Champs, while Kristoff, another former winner at this finish, claimed a distant third. Given the way that his attacks and racing have provided so much character to the Tour de France, it felt almost inevitable that even on the traditionally-sleepy first segment of the final stage, Wout van Aert Jumbo-Visma should provide a last reminder of his love of stirring things up with an early dash off the front. Whilst clinking the champagne glasses, they also celebrated being the first team in 25 years to take both green and yellow, as well as the King of the Mountains title courtesy of Vingegaard. Others to come to the front as the peloton ambled along at the slowest average speed by far of this year's race included Philippe Gilbert Lotto Soudal , celebrating his final Tour de France in his last year as a pro. The five finally created a move that stuck, even if the hot pursuit by Lotto Soudal and Team DSM hardly augured well for their chances. And with a margin of 12 seconds at 10 kilometres to go, there was hardly much room for optimism. At this point though, Trek-Segafredo, Bahrain Victorious and QuickStep-AlphaVinyl massed again at the front and squashed the last minute breakaway efforts.

The year-old former fish-market worker claimed his first Tour de France title, a year after his breakout performance when he came second to Pogacar. Vingegaard was born in December and raised in Hillerslev, a fishing village of just inhabitants, in a completely flat landscape on the shores of the North Sea. He joined Colo-Quick, a continental Tour team, at 19 and worked in a fish business in the mornings before training. Runner-up Pogacar won three stages along the way and also took the white jersey for best under rider for a third straight year. So to finish second is still exceptional. Jumbo-Visma produced a brilliant collective effort with six stage wins, the green sprint jersey and the red combativity jersey for van Aert and the polka dot mountains jersey for Vingegaard as well as the overall title and yellow jersey. Geraint Thomas, the champion, was third after the veteran raced largely at his own pace, silencing doubters who thought that at 36, the affable Welshman was past his best.
