The Wind in the Willows is a British animated television film directed by Dave Unwin and written by Ted Walker , and based on the novel of the same name , a classic of children's literature by Kenneth Grahame. The film includes live action bookending segments with Vanessa Redgrave as a grandmother narrating the story to her grandchildren: the action morphs into an animated setting as she opens the book. Whilst out on a riverboat with her three grandchildren Emma, Alexandra and Edward, a woman tells them the story of The Wind in the Willows. Disenchanted with spring cleaning, Mole ventures out of his hole for the first time and stumbles across a river and a friendly inhabitant, Ratty. The two animals recognize the wanderlust they share despite their differences in natural breeding and bond with each other. They call on Mr. Toad, who to Ratty's annoyance has chosen to abandon the river and takes them on a road trip with a gypsy caravan. A passing motor car causes the caravan to crash and Toad to develop a bitter obsession for motor cars. Back at the riverbank, Ratty becomes disillusioned with the faith in his beliefs expressed by Mole and the locals of the river; he strongly but irrationally considers emigrating south but Mole brings him back to his senses. By Winter, Mole's patience to wait for Mr. Badger to come wears thin and he tries to venture to Badger's home in the heart of the Wild Wood, where he gets overwhelmed by the hostility of the local weasels around him and hides in fear.

Multitudinous TV and film adaptations from all around the world, animated and live action, filled screens for years. Indeed, saw two British all-star cast animated films, though only one seems to still be especially fondly remembered today. Like the novel, the film follows the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Mr Toad through the beautiful English countryside along a riverbank. Many say the story is a polemic about knowing your place in the world — given its Edwardian middle-class roots, this is not an unfair interpretation. But when he rediscovers his old home, abandoned by him during a bout of spring cleaning when he became bored, he realises what has been missing from his new life, and remembers the pleasures of home. With this foundation restored, Mole can take his place in the wider world and help Ratty and Badger try to knock some sense into Toad.

Toad returns to his ancestral home and, horrified to find everything ruined and missing, assumes the worst for all of his recklessness to his riverbanker friends. Doesn't that tell you something? Doormats know their place. This is one of my very first movie memories, and from what I could remember the film was beautiful both in its asthetics and in the narrative. His face is often shown in extreme close-up, filling and even spilling over the frame. The language is very close to the books and I was glad to see that the animals still smoked pipes and cigars and carried pistols. If you hate the prison system, love buttery toast, and long to mope about in whining dependence surrounded by gorgeous scenery while your wittier life partner adoringly bullies you and fixes your mistakes, boy is this the movie for you.
