Tamriel , also known as the Arena , is one of the main continents of the planet Nirn. Bitter years of endless war had its effect on the populace, and the name Tamriel seldom fell from anguished lips. Much of Tamriel's history is known and documented, but large swathes are still unknown, particularly the periods known as the Dawn Era and the Merethic Era. According to the narrative of the Anuad , the original singular landmass of Nirn was broken apart into at least four major landmasses—Tamriel, Akavir , Atmora , and Yokuda. It was at the end of the Dawn Era that the Aldmer of Aldmeris began to diverge along cultural and biological lines, starting the process that would lead to the modern mer races.

The map is accompanied by a helpful legend that categorizes the provinces marked on the map based on their appearance in the game's various installments. The provinces that are available to explore in ESO are marked in green, while those that appeared in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim , are marked in yellow. Finally, provinces that haven't been seen since the game's very first installment, Arena , are marked in brown. This categorization can help players quickly understand which regions are available to explore in the current game, and which ones may be added in future updates or DLCs. This map also includes locations that will be available in the upcoming DLC Necrom. In Necrom, the map is limited to the Telvanni Peninsula, home to large mushrooms, rocky landscapes, and Necrom city. However, some areas of Hammerfell , Cyrodiil Skyrim, Morrowind, Elsweyr, and Black Marsh have certain sections that are closed off to players.

The Dawn Era began with the creation of Mundus ; it is an era that is known mostly through myth and legend, which are different in different cultures, however most scholars agree on what events led up to the start of recorded history. Time did not exist and when it was created it was not linear, like during a Dragon Break. The Merethic Era, otherwise known as the Mythic Era, was the era between the start of linear time and recorded history. It was a time when all manner of mythological occurrences are said to have taken place. The era was commonly considered to be outside of verifiable history, as humanity did not possess a written language to speak of until the end of the Mythic Era.

Tamriel Rebuilt commonly abbreviated as TR is the largest collaborative fan-based modding project for the Elder Scrolls series, with the goal of creating the mainland of Morrowind. Tamriel Rebuilt currently covers all of northeastern Morrowind and much of the eastern and central part of the province, with the latest release adding the remainder of the Aanthirin region. Future development will focus on the southern portion of the province, including the fungal forests of Othreleth Woods and Coronati Basin , and the winding canyons of Shipal-Shin. The project has existed since before Morrowind ' s release, though the leadership and members have changed many times since then. A collection of province mods, Project Tamriel , shares assets with Tamriel Rebuilt through Tamriel Data , and they are meant to complement each other.
