General Generals are used to command armies and fleets in battle. Their command rating influences the effectiveness with which their army or fleet fights. When a force does not have a general one of the other units is assigned as the command unit. The command unit does not become a general's bodyguard, its unit type stays the same. In these cases the army fights with a severe disadvantage, as there is no-one to rally or inspire the troops, although the command unit does provide a small morale bonus.

The General is a type of sword or bow cavalry in Total War: Shogun 2. The duty of this loyal samurai bodyguard is to protect their general from harm, whatever the risk to their own lives. This unit can carry out vital manoeuvres such as flanking attacks or chasing routers, but that may leave the general vulnerable, so any aggressive action should be undertaken with great caution. Historically, daimyo surrounded themselves with a large retinue of bodyguards, weapon carriers and various other attendants. Generals are recruited in five ways: first, they can be male family members who come of age; second, a random event may trigger giving the player the option to hire a new general for koku. Armies without generals that win heroic victories may also trigger the same event. Enemy generals can also be bribed by metsuke to betray their faction and join the player's faction.

Daimyos are the Head of the Family and unless you have a lot of sons to take over this position, it is best to just let him sit at his home castle and drink tea. Stack your one or two fighting Generals with max. I always have 3 units of Yari Cav. Then it is mop up time with all 4 horse units to reduce the survivors to the lowest number possible. A couple of Yari Samurai on either flank of the battle line will handle the opposition cavalry so they don't perform an end-around on your General. This is realistic as in real life, Generals lead and conduct operations and only in dire situations will they fight.

In order to get the Summer Son trait you will need at least two armies close enough to each other that your movement points will let you get there. Of course that is just me and my play stile. Certain skill effects are static buffs which cannot be stacked or enhanced. Really just keep them far far away from any enemy units, the only thing they are really good for is providing morale bonuses and sometimes using the rally function. Thanks for all who can answer.
