Pokemon starters tier list
Typically, these will be a choice of Pokemon from three different types — water, fire or grass. What if you had access to every single Starter Pokemon though?
For Pokemon players, one of the most important questions for every new mainline game is which starter they'll pick when they begin their journey. When Pokemon Sword and Shield 's starters were first revealed, the Internet quickly became embroiled with discussions and debates over which of the three was the best one. Thanks to website Tiermaker, Pokemon fans have been able to share exactly how they rank the starter Pokemon of each generation so far, with only the best of the best reaching the coveted S Tier. And with over tier lists made specifically for the starter Pokemon, Tiermaker has compiled the data in order to work out the average rankings and created a separate tier list to show which are the most and least popular starters. Unsurprisingly, there is clearly a lot of love for the original generation of games, Pokemon Red and Blue , as all three of its starters - Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle - made it to S tier. The only other Pokemon that managed to join them was Mudkip, the Water starter from Ruby and Sapphire. Mudkip very quickly became a fan favorite upon its debut and is well known among some fans for spawning the "i herd u liek mudkipz" meme.

The original three starters of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle set the standard all the way back in or in Japan. Little did we know then that every subsequent generation would be compared to the now iconic trio. All three are prime examples of what a grass, fire, and water type starter should be. The only second generation starter to make the S grade, Totodile is right up there with Squirtle as the best water type starter. The looks, the charm, and the fighting ability. Just look at that face. Although three of our S-Tier starters are fire types, the majority of them land in the bottom half of this list. Much better than the average starter, but without that little bit extra to push over into S territory. Still, you could do a lot worse than Cyndaquil, as you spend hundreds of hours in a game. Between S and A, over half of the water starters make an appearance, which means water fans, on average, have had it best over the years.
Which would you choose?
New starters means new discussions around them as my colleague Tyler made a tier list with all of them. However, his choices are awful; ranking Turtwig in the lowest tier is a terrible mistake. In no specific order whatsoever, starters are ranked on: their base design along with that of their evolutions; their move pool and how useful they are in combat; how they personally handle their specific region; how unique they are; whether or not they play a prominent role in the anime; their type advantages; and, in some cases, their stat spread.
