Sign In. Outlander Hide Spoilers. TheLittleSongbird 15 August Not that I was expecting it to be bad, just that the idea in hindsight was somewhat on the derivative side. However, I found Outlander to be a very entertaining movie. True, the second half is not as good as the first half, some parts of the storytelling seemed a little forced and the ending was predictable I'll give you this though, the action is quite well choreographed. However, while the story is not the most original on the block others have mentioned the parallels to Beowulf and Lord of the Rings the first half is actually very interesting and entertaining with a noble stab at making the characters likable. It also looks great, the effects are good with a very menacing-looking monster and scenery and costumes that do at least have a sense of wonder and grit. The soundtrack is not too overbearing and has a good atmosphere, and the script has some snap and flow. Outlander is not entirely accurate perhaps but I have honestly seen movies that have done far worse jobs that are nowhere near as entertaining as Outlander. The cast was great on paper, and on screen I was also impressed. James Caviezel is an excellent lead, and a supporting cast that includes Sophia Myles, John Hurt and Ron Perlman promises much and the film delivered as much also. All in all, a great cast help to make Outlander a worthwhile film, the second half is not as well done as the rest of the film but wasn't a complete waste either.

I am tempted to describe the plot of "Outlander" as preposterous, but a movie about an alien spaceship crashing into a Viking fjord during the Iron Age is likely to be preposterous. Two alien life forms survive the crash: Kainan, and a monster known as "The Moorwen. The Moorwen looks like a giant, speedy, armored hippo-beetle with a toothy front end designed in the same forges of hell that produced the alien in " Alien. Kainan was returning from the Moorwen's home planet, which his race had terraformed, not quite wiping out all the Moorwens. The creatures counterattacked, wiping out most of Kainan's fellow settlers; what he doesn't realize is that one Moorwen was on board ship when he blasted off. Kainan uses a handy device to pump the local Earth language Viking, spoken in English into his mind through his eyeball, and soon encounters the nearest Viking village. Having seen more than a few movies, we intuit that this village will contain a venerable king Rothgar, played by John Hurt , his bodacious daughter Freya, played by Sophia Myles , a jealous young warrior Wulfric, played by Jack Huston and a menacing dissident Gunnar, played by Ron Perlman.
The Bottom Line Empty. The opening sequence is all science fiction as a space ship zooms through the skies and crashes on a remote seaside cliff top. Appearing invulnerable with a nifty 25th century sidearm, the intruder explores the terrain and discovers a village that has been decimated with buildings burned and bodies everywhere. He is quickly knocked off his feet, disarmed and captured by a Viking warrior on horseback named Wulfric Jack Huston , who carries him to a vast encampment. Without revealing anything about himself, Kainan convinces Rothgar and his people that he has inadvertently brought with him from the north a fearsome creature called the Moorwen. After assorted games that lead to male bonding, they all set off to find the beast. All the crafts are topline in the film with the highly convincing Moorwen designed by Patrick Tatopolous and visual effects supervised by David Kuklish.

The Moorwen looks like a giant, speedy, armored hippo-beetle with a toothy front end designed in the same forges of hell that produced the alien in " Alien. Cinema was completely packed, not a spare seat in the house, and the crowd really seemed to enjoy it. Soon, when the villagers start vanishing and turning up as mutilated corpses, the vikings realize that Kainen might be telling the truth after all From out in the distant galaxies and far from his own home world, comes 'Kainan' a space traveler James Caviezel who's spacecraft has been damaged and sent careening towards Earth. A few elements keep Outlander from being a cult-masterpiece however; it is too long, there are too many false climaxes and the goofy plot only just holds up. Outlander is about a spaceman Kainan, play by James Caviezel, of the Passion fame who crashes to earth during the age of the vikings.
