For a few years, the KTM R was my dream bike, then I finally scraped together the cash to buy a secondhand one and just sold it two months later. Far as I can see the majority are happy with their KTM s or Husqvarna with some key mods done, but I also know a substantial number of us are disappointed too. I figured it couldn't hurt to offer a dissenting opinion so that anyone looking at the big thumpers can get a broader perspective. The KTM definitely has its fans and I can see why - over 70 horsepower at the rear wheel is very addictive for the speed jockeys but I had trouble seeing past quite a few issues If found the had a close ratio gearbox compared to similar bike in its class.

I have found a for sale from a dealership with a little over 1, miles on it totally stock Should I have any concerns or items to check outside normal bike stuff that is specific to the enduro R? From what I have seen the 's dont have the rocker arm issue but are there any other common problems with the bike? Ive read a few things on oil consumption?? But couldnt make heads or tails. Any reasons I shouldnt buy the bike from a reliability standpoint? I feel like the bike will suit my needs and intended use perfectly I just am not familiar enough with the reliability history of the or any problems I may encounter. I also realize there is a wealth of information on here that I can dig into and I certainly but was hopping for a pre-buying cliff notes version! Thanks from Asheville NC! Back in , when I first informed myself about the ty, I learned two things: The ty is 1. The Enduro is a unique motorcycle without any other serious competitor on the market. There are loads of reports and badmouth-rumors out there, which all mentioned the same: The ty is a great dual-sport-enduro, but very unreliable and suffers many technical problems. Especially the second point often was highlighted with usual, sometimes brand- and sometimes type-releated comments like:. Short talk: The ty had a few great advantages compared to the other few dual sport bikes out there, which let me negate the risk. The main modifications for addressing the ty typical weak spots had been:. In hindsight, now after

I am told the R had a radical makeover for , so I don't know how much of the report below is still accurate. I did a quick google around and apparently there were recalls on the model for cam sprocket bolts needing Loctite and problems with the traction control. A few owners reported issues with the rev limiter coming in too early and engine light problems sometimes with the engine stalling too - one owner was given a new bike when KTM couldn't resolve the problem. There are other isolated cases of various problems with electronics, probably not surprising with a revamped model. Prematurely leaking countershaft seals is still an issue for some models, it can occur as early as the first ride or two.

It certainly was an eye opener after reading almost nothing but rave reviews. If the suspension is good, and it runs well from the factory and these are big if's that are still to be determined , why would anyone have the Husky? But why didn't KTM simply offer this mapping solution already? Any reasons I shouldnt buy the bike from a reliability standpoint? The original two designs had a cc motor, but in , KTM revamped the with a true-to-name cc motor, the original model was discontinued, and the Enduro R was all that remained. But this isn't the bike's purpose, so all but the shortest riders will probably be buying aftermarket pegs to feel less cramped on the bike. Easy to ride slow, easy to ride fast. You can find it on Youtube if needed. This was probably due to its motard heritage, and KTM neglected to change the ratios despite it being a common complaint - the is no different to the in this regard. When there is an ultra hot chick available that is ultra reliable, low maintenance and willing to be in a long term relationship I am sure we will all be in the queue. That is a very odd review. Of course the hooligan factor is a nice bonus, but hard on rear tires. SmellyPirate , Dragonflylily , shrubitup and 2 others like this.
The following year marked the debut of the Enduro R models, which had a taller suspension and seat height.
Posted April 4, This review will hopefully balance their bias, and you will find that all the above points are discussed on various forum posts about the KTM R. It's a dirt bike with some street attitude. And is it correct that the only difference is the updated has better balancing and lower vibration? The R now has a flat power curve and can pull from just above idle until it's screaming away. SmellyPirate , Dragonflylily , shrubitup and 2 others like this. I had a similar experience with a Zero FX, I dreamed over it for a couple of years and then did the plunge.
