I work in the blended field of landscape architecture, material culture and site hermeneutics. My research utilises creative practice and design-centric assessment methodologies to explore the human-landscape relationship and its implications for site interpretation and design intervention. Using a diverse range of tools, adapted from field sciences, engineering, anthropology and design; I am interested in investigating how landscape is deciphered, interpreted and then acted upon through both policy and practical site intervention. The diversity of my approach has developed from my background in creative arts practice, field research geomorphology, engineering geology and site assessment and practice-based vocational experience engineering, resource management and applied conservation project planning. My current research, undertaken as part of my PhD, seeks to critique current landscape assessment and site reading approaches from within the field of landscape architecture and provide a grounded, co-design focussed strategy for landscape interpretation and implementation. In developing new instruments for landscape reading and improving the diversity of landscape knowledge, I seek to inform both the processes and practices of landscape architectural practice and explore new expressions of landscape identity and connection.
