We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Lawn care can be tedious, but once the grass starts growing in the spring, mowing becomes a fact of life in most neighborhoods. Work through the following steps, and you may be able to get your puttering grass guzzler up and running again in no time. When the air filter becomes clogged or too dirty, it can prevent the engine from starting. To keep this from happening, replace paper filters—or clean or replace foam filters—after every 25 hours of engine use. The process for removing the filter depends on whether you are operating a riding or walk-behind lawn mower. For a riding mower, turn off the engine and engage the parking brake; for a walk-behind mower, pull the spark plug wire from the plug. Then, lift the filter from its housing. The only choice for paper filters is replacement. Allow it to dry completely, and then wipe fresh motor oil over the filter, replace it in its housing, and power up the mower—this time to the pleasant whirring of an engine in tip-top condition.

Craftsman is a popular brand of lawn mower and for good reason. So take a moment to check that there is actually some gas in the fuel tank. This is a pretty easy and obvious fix; add some fresh fuel. Make sure that you are using the correct fuel for your mower and that it is a good quality. On the fuel pump of your lawn mower, you will notice that there are two check valves located on the output and input ports. The reason for these valves is to stop fuel getting back into the gas tank once it has left; however, from time to time, they can malfunction. You will need to check the function of the fuel pump by looking at the valves, pulse port line and the diaphragm that can be found inside the pump. If the valves are not functioning as they should then they will need to be replaced. The same can be said for any part of the fuel pump system.

You give the starter cord a pull, but nothing happens. Your mower stays silent. When you pull the starter cord, it sends an electrical spark to light the fuel in the engine. The ignition coil can go bad over time or due to moisture or electrical issues. The fuel pump in your Craftsman lawn mower is like its heart—it pumps fuel from the tank to the engine. Fuel pump problems can happen because of clogs, wear and tear, or electrical issues.

Lawn Mower Maintenance. Voted Undo. Old gas can also lead to problems starting. Norman Bailey normanbailey Rep: 49 4 1. For a riding mower, turn off the engine and engage the parking brake; for a walk-behind mower, pull the spark plug wire from the plug. If your gas is more than a month old, use an oil siphon pump to drain it from the tank. I took the air filter off and clamped the gas line and waited a while. To keep this from happening, replace paper filters—or clean or replace foam filters—after every 25 hours of engine use. So I replaced the gas filter and installed a shut off valve on the gas line. Hope this helps!
