With Titans Season 3 debuting soon, I figured now was as good a time as any to write a bit about the real breakout star of Reign of the Supermen: Superboy. Much as I love Steel, it was Conner just Superboy back then who has really stuck around as a popular character. Conner as a character has varied widely in personality and powerset, with fans of each of his incarnations. However Conner really only has two major incarnations to compare. He was arrogant, a glory hound, more interested in getting paid and scoring with girls than he was in being a hero.

Chances are, you've heard of Superboy, but these days, the codename probably evokes the smiling face of Jonathan Kent, Clark and Lois's half-Kryptonian son. And that's all well and good—don't get us wrong, we love Jon—but did you know that there was a character who held the mantle before him? And one that had a much, much stranger connection to the Man of Steel than basic biology? Enter Conner Kent, aka Kon-El—the first or, well, the second depending on how you calculate things Superboy. Strange Beginnings. To understand Conner's place in the oft-confusing web of the Superman family, we first have to go all the way back to the beginning in the late s. While superhero comics were in their infancy, creators were throwing all kinds of concepts at the wall to see what stuck, all with very little concern for more modern ideas like shared continuity. The "family" of heroes was on the rise with the breakout hits of characters like Shazam then called Captain Marvel and stories for kids and teens were flying off the shelf after the popularity of Robin. Thus, a new teenage version of the Man of Steel was drafted up and introduced—but rather than being a sidekick for Superman, this Superboy was a literal teenage Clark Kent, set in what was functionally an alternate continuity from the adult version. But as we said, this was really before the whole idea of continuity in comics had taken shape, so things got a little weird pretty fast—especially as Superboy stories got more and more bombastic, taking its young hero on grand adventures and teaming him up with new characters that the adult version of Kal-El had never even met. Things eventually were smoothed over many years later when Crisis on Infinite Earths helped streamline Superman's history, erasing his time as a teenage hero from canon while also introducing alternate versions of Superboy from alternate earths. But the idea of a teenager with Superman-flavored abilities didn't simply shuffle off into the multiverse. In , a brand new Superboy was introduced—one that was not simply a teenage Clark. Well, sort of. You see, this Superboy was actually an attempt at duplicating Clark's genes as part of a cloning program.

Here, Metropolis is grittydecaying, a City wholly rooted in the problems of today. As Conner's physiology matures, his Kryptonian abilities began to manifest themselves thus gaining most of Kal-El's powers, conner kent.

Artificially aged to his mid-teens and implanted with the equivalent of a high school education, Superboy was set free by the Newsboy Legion before he could be implanted with safeguards to control him. One of the boys gave him a leather jacket before he set out into the city, where he had his first encounter with a villain when he found Sidearm attempting to steal money from an ATM. Superman's clone escapes Cadmus. The clone's arrival in Metropolis coincided with three others taking up the mantle of "Superman". Two of them, "the Man of Tomorrow" Cyborg Superman and "the Last Son of Krypton" the Eradicator , insisted they were the real Superman resurrected, while "the Man of Steel" John Henry Irons made no such claim, nor did the young clone who was open about his origin to Lois Lane , thought he insisted on being called "Superman" not "Superboy"!

A cameo in the Titans series finale brings big changes for Conner "Superboy" Kent. The cameo could have been a major game changer for the series had Titans been picked up for a fifth season. Unfortunately, while impressive, the cameo also seems anti-climactic given the series' sudden cancelation, adding a melancholy note to a moment of triumph that had been eagerly anticipated by both viewers and Conner Kent himself. The story of Titans season 4 found Conner Kent torn between extremes. After being stood-up by Superman following a promised meeting with the Kryptonian hero, Conner began to explore the history of his other birth father, billionaire Lex Luthor , who combined his DNA with Superman's to create a super-son he could mold in his own image.

Conner Kent, aka Superboy , may have been molded in Superman's image, but the young man has never let that fact define him as a person. While Conner does rightfully consider himself a proud member of the Houses of El and Kent, he's built a life for himself that doesn't revolve around his relationship with the Man of Steel and has become an exceptional hero in his own right. And yet despite all of his efforts, Conner wasn't able to avoid emulating one of the iconic, and gruesome, moments of Superman's career. Conner's death and eventual resurrection through the use of advanced technology, bear some uncanny similarities to Superman's own demise and return, the former of which was ironically the catalyst for Conner's creation. The boy who would one day be named Conner Kent was created by Project Cadmus to be a potential perfect replacement to the recently-deceased Superman, one that would be unquestioningly loyal to the organization's board of directors. Instead, Conner was accidentally released from his test tube before he was fully mature and escaped to Metropolis where he would career as a superhero would begin. At first, Conner was more concerned with the fame and attention that came with being a superhero than he was with living up to his predecessor's legacy. All of this changed once Superman took Conner under his wing after the Man of Steel was resurrected through the use of Kryptonian healing technology. Under Superman's tutelage, Conner fully embraced his destiny as a hero and accepted the title of Superboy. From there, Conner went on to become a founding member of the teenage superhero team Young Justice and staying with them as they evolved into the Teen Titans of the early '00s.

After hiding out on the Kent Farm for some time, Conner received an unexpected visit from his chemistry teacher, who turns out to be Element Lad, who is there to recruit Superboy for the fight for New Krypton against Brainiac's invasion with the other Legion agents in the past along with Mon-El. He rejoins Cadmus and begins working as a field agent with Dubbilex and Guardian , after leaving Krypto with his friend, Hillary Chang perhaps for the last time. Superboy and the Krypto did not care for one another at all. After one last visit to The Compound, Superboy realizes nothing will ever be like it once was. He freed the almost adult Guardian who decided to destroy the other clones.

A modern variation on the original Superboy , the character first appeared as Superboy in The Adventures of Superman June , and was created by writer Karl Kesel and artist Tom Grummett. From the character's debut in to August , Superboy was depicted as a genetically-engineered metahuman clone of human origin designed by Project Cadmus as a duplicate and equivalent of Superman. The character was retconned in Teen Titans vol.

Superboy managed to defeat Match and destroy Agenda's lair, with Spence and the directors all taken into custody. Superboy encountered Harvest who then caused him to go berserk, using a Kryptonian trigger phrase. There, he admitted that he felt at peace inside the simulation, as he finally knew what it was like to be Superman, and that he was now feeling guilty about it. Conner and the Chained had a telekinetic contest, as the Chained tried to push the buildings down and Conner tried to hold them up. Colu Daxam Items. His first night there, Superboy met Hero and got into a fight with Kalibre , which prompted the two of them to be teleported to a distant asteroid--where a police force known as I. Superboy was on a mission with Delta Squad to track down Clayface in the sewers below the city, and was ambushed by the villain. My theoretical line-up would be something like:.
