The film, set and shot in Johannesburg , is about an artificial general intelligence law enforcement robot captured and taught by gangsters, who nickname it Chappie. A skyrocketing crime rate leads the city of Johannesburg , South Africa to buy a squadron of scouts—state-of-the-art armor-plated attack robots—from weapons manufacturer Tetravaal. These autonomous androids were developed by British scientist Deon Wilson and largely supplant the overwhelmed human police force. Deon is praised for Tetravaal's success, but Vincent grows envious when the police are unwilling to give his heavy weapons platform equal attention. At home, Deon creates a prototype artificial intelligence that mimics a human mind to the point of feeling emotions and having opinions, but Tetravaal CEO Michelle Bradley refuses to let him test the A. Undeterred, Deon steals a recently damaged robot before it is destroyed and puts it in his van, along with the "guard key" needed to update the robot's software. On his way home with the damaged police robot, he is kidnapped by gang members Ninja, Yolandi, and Amerika.

Well: yes, yes, yes and yes! It is absolutely all of those things. Wonderfully so. A distressing sequence halfway through ticks all of those boxes. Chappie , repurposed from a police robot into an AI artificially intelligent experiment, a mere child in terms of his developing consciousness, has been handed to thugs who beat him and burn him alive. Fleeing, he collapses on the concrete, staggering across train tracks, limping through the mud. He finally settles on a hill overlooking an overcast Johannesburg, lost and alone. This heartfelt outcast, maligned, mistreated, misunderstood. How apt that the film was too. Even some of those who quite liked Chappie had a problem with its tonal balance. It had tender emotional beats but was wrapped up in a violent gangster drama. And it was ridiculous. But the clash was the point.
Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle rated it three out of four chappie 1 and wrote of Blomkamp, "It's hard to say how much he's doing consciously and how much he's doing through intuition, but he's doing really interesting things in Chappieand right from the beginning, chappie 1. Sign In. Chappie Hide Spoilers. Concerns over the use of drones to kill people and the use of military equipment by police make Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie" more relevant. Although some scenes in the movie come across as silly, I interpreted it as a warning about over-reliance on technology for law enforcement. The South African setting makes sense: four decades of institutionalized racism gave way to one of the highest crime rates in the developed world. In the end, I recommend the movie.
