There really is no question here that caviar is the more durable leather. The pebbled quality lends itself well to daily wear and tear and holds structure very well because of its more rigid nature. You will eventually see some minor wear on the corners of your flap but if your experience is anything like mine — this will be minor and only after several years. I have heard complaints about the dullness of leather in cases but this will have to do with either the type of caviar leather because Chanel likes to keep us on our toes and vary the finishes or the batch more on that further down.

Caviar leather errs towards the more casual end of the scale, making it a great choice for your everyday bag. The grained calfskin and boxy structure lend it a contemporary edge. This is what puts some people off buying Lambskin, despite its beguiling appearance. It should be noted though that most small surface scuffs like this can be easily buffed out of Lambskin. Even so, if you invest in a Chanel Lambskin bag , you may need to make peace with the reality of a few scratches here and there. Chanel recommends that you avoid getting your bags wet, no matter the leather type. If you do get caught in a rain shower it happens , just dry your bag as quickly as possible. When it comes to leather jackets, the hide used to make that particular jacket is the pivotal factor in your purchase. Steerhide is a bovine leather made from the hide of male cows, known as steers. A readily available leather to most manufacturers, steerhide is consistent in grain and weight throughout the hide, and usually has a subtle gloss-sheen thanks to a combination of natural oils and resins used in the tanning process. Often stiff upon purchase, steerhide will soften up with enough wear, and the initial rigidity only helps it to mold to your body. A classic leather jacket which utilizes steerhide is the Schott Perfecto Motorcycle Jacket, a piece iconically worn by Marlon Brando in the film, The Wild One. This archetypal motorcycle jacket features an asymmetrical zip closure, waist belt, and snap buttons throughout. Horsehide is a luxury leather often hailed as the all-rounder for its durability and handsome aesthetic. Horses are reared in smaller groups and receive a higher level of care compared to cows, so their skin is generally free of blemishes or damage which allows tanneries to produce a top quality leather that has a super-fine grain and smooth hand. Horsehide has a high level of natural water repellency which is only bolstered by the tanning process, and its tough composition makes it resistant to stretching or losing its shape.
