Since then, he has enjoyed making a diverse range of knives, from practical working knives to beautiful and unique art knives, featuring the decorative art of his wife, Carol Ann O'Connor. He works with various types of blade steel and a large variety of handle materials, including timbers from the Goldfields of Western Australia. Joining The Australian Knifemakers Guild is part of your knife making journey. Membership demonstrates that you have reached a degree of proficiency and quality as adjudged by your experienced knife making peers. Full voting membership is recognition of both your achievements and your commitment to furthering your knife making goals. It is important to note that Full Membership offers the option of liability insurance as part of its package. Probationary membership is intended for those new makers wishing to progress and become full voting members of the Guild. Before being accepted as a probationary member new makers must submit three knives to their State Representative for appraisal. These are rated against a set of criteria.

Custom-made blades in high demand as ancient craft of knifemaking undergoes revival. An explosion of interest in bespoke, handmade knives is being fuelled by social media and reality television, with thousands turning out to see the "rock stars" of the knifemaking world at trade shows around the country. Some Australian knifemakers boast thousands of followers, and the American TV reality program Forged In Fire is heating up hype about the craft. Australian Knifemakers Guild secretary Kevin Room said there was growing demand for custom knives for cooking, hunting, camping and outdoor use, and also among collectors. Mr Room said there were Australian Knifemakers Guild members, representing a group of "pioneers" who wanted to take the craft to the "next level". The craft has exploded in recent years," he said. Mr Room said there were about 26, members of the Australian Blacksmiths and Knifemakers group on social media.
