It appears in a multitude of Old Norse sagas and mythological texts. Asgard is named twice in Eddic poetry.

The MCU has done an admirable job of adapting the wide and dynamic world created in Marvel comics. Yet, it's not possible to include everything shown in the comics. And that sometimes means that changes have to be made along the way. Sometimes these changes focus on characters or plots. Other times, these changes are about location. For example, Asgard itself faced several changes between the comics and the movies.

The very origin and creation of Asgard, as well as its history, are described in the collection of Norse tales Gylfaginning. Those tales were collected by Snorri Sturluson back in the 13th century. Those stories mention the Swedish king Gylfi who traveled to a place he thought was Asgard the gods tricked him into thinking so. So Gylfi, disguised as a traveler and calling himself Gangleri, meets three manifestations of Odin. These strange, lordly individuals sit on thrones one above the other.

Maybe stuff before that too Anyway, from my understanding of it, Thor and Odin and people are always talking about "The Nine Realms", which are connected to each other, and include Asgard, Midgard, Jottenheim, etc.

The Nine Realms hung on the branches, or else grew from the roots and bole of Yggdrasil , the world tree, which gave structure and form to the cosmos. Their position within Yggdrasil determined both their core characteristics and their connections to other realms. Though the realms were distinct from one another, their boundaries were surprisingly porous. Intrepid travelers, both mortal and divine, could and did traverse the liminal spaces between worlds. Asgard and Midgard were connected via the great rainbow bridge known as the Bifrost , making it possible for deities to influence the humans who adored and abhorred them in equal measure. According to Norse creation myths, the yawning void called Ginnungagap once dominated all creation. During this embryonic stage, the universe held just two realms: Muspelheim, the primordial realm of heat and flame, and Niflheim, the primordial realm of cold and frost.

Though the mighty immortal gods of Norse Mythology lived in a seemingly impenetrable fortress in the sky called Asgard, they were still prone to one lamentable weakness: a fear of invasion.
