They were also ordered to pay damages of up to several thousand euros. Last Friday, the Antwerp Court of Appeal issued its ruling in the case against eighteen former members of a fraternity called Reuzegom, who subjected year-old Sanda Dia to a brutal hazing. However, the court acquitted them of administering the salty fish sauce, which led to his death, stating that the product is widely available and that most people are not aware that too much salt can be harmful.

Maar aan wat zijn ze precies allemaal schuldig? Aan wat niet? En vooral: wat was de redenering van het hof? Om tot de uitspraak te komen, heeft het hof gebruik gemaakt van het dossier, met daarin de vaststellingen door de politie, de technische vaststellingen, de analyse van camerabeelden, de uitlezing van de gsm's, de ANPR-camera's, de laptops van de beklaagden, het telefonieonderzoek, de getuigenverklaringen en de ondervragingen van de beklaagden. Dit was de zwaarste aanklacht, en daar staan ook de zwaarste straffen op. Maar alle Reuzegommers werden vrijgesproken, ze zijn dus niet schuldig aan het opzettelijk toedienen van schadelijke stoffen met de dood tot gevolg. Concreet gaat het hier over de grote hoeveelheid zoute visolie die Sanda Dia op 5 december moest drinken en die hem uiteindelijk twee dagen later fataal zou worden. Belangrijk hierbij is dat de daders "wetens en willens" gehandeld moeten hebben, en dat was volgens het hof niet het geval.
