It uses some of the same patterns that Makiko designed for the Square Plate. The Octo eight sided and Square four sided Plate s have significantly different slotted opening dimensions. While the Square Plate has an opening size of less than an inch 0. The larger opening on the Octo plate allows the braid er to use more strands to make a larger, wider flat braid. The ten additional slots allows larger patterns and provides more surface area to manipulate your braid s. A Marudai is a round-top braid ing stand or frame used to make a wide variety of kumihimo braid s in many different forms: round, square, rectangular, flat, triangular, and other polygonal shapes. It is considered the most versatile of the five basic types of kumihimo braid ing stands, or dai. The marudai is traditionally made of wood, however, alternative materials such as acrylic and cardboard can be used. Due to the lack of written or physical evidence, it is not known when the marudai first appeared in Japan. It is believed to be an invention of the early Edo period , as evidenced by its appearance in paintings and woodblock prints of the era. Round-top braid ing stands are not unique to Japan; they exist in other Asian cultures and in Scandinavia and Europe. It is designed to be used in a kneeling position on tatami mats; it may also be placed on a stand or table top. The Western-style marudai is adapted to be used while sitting in a chair. Michael Hattori grew up on the Monterey Peninsula and was interested in Japanese arts and crafts from a young age. In , through Richard Sutherland, he met and began studies with the Japanese kumihimo master, Makiko Tada, as well as Andean and Japanese braid ing master, Rodrick Owen.
