Just before the climax of Jujutsu Kaisen's infamous Shibuya Incident arc can be reached, Yuji had to face yet another hurdle that would not only bring him face to face with a familiar enemy but would test the very foundations of his resolve and make him confront who he is as a person. In this fight, Yuji would face some of the most traumatic events in his life, which would also be the things that would greatly impact the future of the series. So, let's take a look at the climactic battle between Yuji and Mahito. Sukuna's decisive battle against Mahoraga caused untold devastation across much of Shibuya and, towards the end of the fight, Sukuna unveiled his Flame Arrow technique to put the beast down for good. In doing so, the attack also created an incredible explosion that killed hundreds, if not thousands, of residents. Upon seeing the destruction that he indirectly caused, Yuji falls into a depressive state, blaming himself for everything that has happened. However, he then strengthened his resolve and swore to himself to get rid of all the evil in the world so nothing like this would happen again, finding a new purpose despite being heavily traumatized by all that he had seen. At the same time, Jujutsu Kaisen reveals that Nanami survived against Jogo, but was severely burnt in the process. What followed was a heartbreaking scene where Nanami wished to go to Malaysia where he could rest, beautifully juxtaposing his battle against many transfigured humans with scenes of him finally enjoying his life. After Mahito's appearance, Nanami was greeted by a vision of his best friend, Haibara, and in that instance, he made peace with his life and where he was headed.

When most people think of a captivating dynamic between a hero and a villain in Jujutsu Kaisen , they often think of Yuji and Sukuna by default, seeing as how the relationship between the two is one of the central themes of the series. However, Yuji's parallels to a villain tend to run almost just as deep when he is put next to Mahito, the strongest of the Disaster Curses. Mahito claims to be the opposite side of the same coin as Jujutsu Kaisen's protagonist, and when looking at their philosophies and actions throughout the series, it is pretty easy to understand why. The outlook that both characters have on the world is greatly influenced by their nature as a curse and human, and they both greatly differ in how they carry out their goals, despite them being very similar. When he was first introduced into the series, no one could have predicted Mahito to become the perfect antithesis to everything Yuji stood for. In their initial clash, the difference between the two was great and Mahito took a keen interest in Yuji because he could not alter the shape of his soul with his Idle Transfiguration due to the presence of Sukuna in his body. This led to somewhat of an obsession that grew within the Disaster Curse.

This evidence is enough for Nobara to deduce that her adversary is a double of Mahito who can't use his cursed technique on others. Impressed, the special admits Yuji's kick wasn't bad and adds it's time for the battle to move on to the second round. While Todo jumps above one blade and Yuji ducks below the other, Mahito's dismembered head forms its own separate body and activates Soul Multiplicity. After landing back on the ground, Nobara snaps and activates Hairpin , detonating both nails in the sign.
