Tom Good quits the rat race, and with wife Barbara turns the garden of their Surbiton house into a smallholding. Their neighbours, snobbish Margo Leadbetter and her conventional husband Jerr

Tom Good's decision to become self-sufficient bewilders his socially ambitious neighbours. Margo and Jerry are perturbed when the Goods introduce livestock into their garden. Things are starting to happen in Tom's garden, but Barbara is not happy. Margo is horrified when she hears of Tom and Barbara's decision to keep pigs. Determined to make use of available resources, Tom builds a generator fuelled by pig dung.

Tom Good becomes disillusioned with his job in the design department and seemingly meaningless life. He thinks of a brilliant plan, but his neighbours are embarrassed by his new way of life. The Goods begin introducing livestock to Surbiton, much to Margo and Jerry's confusion. Worse follows when, looking out for some chickens, Tom paints the greenhouse pink. While Tom's garden is showing signs of activity and new life, Barbara is beginning to feel the effects of the dull and monotonous work she has been doing. Margo is horrified after learning of Tom and Barbara's intention to keep pigs in their back garden. Hoping to scupper the plan, she turns to the local residents' association for help. A resourceful and determined Tom, much to the disgust of Margo and Jerry, builds a generator that derives its fuel from pig dung. The Goods' savings are dwindling, and Margo and Jerry become convinced that Tom is struggling with the temptation to earn extra money again. Tom, hoping to treat Barbara, winds up taking a job at his old firm. Tom Good.
