I noticed that my Coolant reservoir is filled with a very darl coloured coolant mix. It almost looks deep purple or even black NOT the colours I'm familiar with. Is this the normal colour? Make sure it is not oil. If it is, it could be the sign of a leaking head gasket or other condition where oil and coolant are mixing.
Not many know the importance of the different colors that are available today. If an engine is used without coolant antifreeze , it can suffer extended damage especially during winter. Also in wintertime, water solidifies freezes and expands in volume which can crack your engine block, radiator and heater cores. It lowers the freeze point of the coolant to protect it from freezing, even in the worst winter conditions. Coolant in the summer time works as an anti-boil and protects the system components from corrosion, which is a big deal especially with aluminum components.

When you do the swap, I recommend a new t stat since it will be an easy swap with the coolant out. Paste as plain text instead. The overflow is bright pink and the radiator is brownish. Green alone will create a corrosive system faster and have less erosion protection.
