Our campus has been serving the community since August 14, Burton is named after Walter Moses Burton, a remarkable man. Burton was brought to Texas from North Carolina as a slave. While enslaved his master taught him to read and write, skills that eventually served him well. After a very inauspicious beginning, he entered into politics and in became the first African-American sheriff in Fort Bend County. To commemorate his accomplishment, our school mascot is known as the Burton Sheriff. In , he became a Texas State Senator. In the Senate he championed the education of African Americans. He died in , but he will forever be remembered at Walter Moses Burton Elementary. WBE exists to set high academic expectations, building trust in a safe, inclusive environment that promotes a positive culture of academic, emotional, and personal growth while providing opportunities for parent and community involvement.
