This involves constantly lifting, lowering, and carrying boxes and parcels weighing anywhere from just a few ounces up to pounds. It is a very active job with nearly non-stop lifting, bending, reaching, and twisting movements throughout a shift. You must be comfortable being on your feet for extended periods. Having physical and mental stamina is crucial for maintaining the rapid pace required to keep thousands of packages moving accurately through the system each day. Even averaging 20 lbs per package, lifting hundreds daily equates to tons of weight. Proper lifting technique is essential. Some veteran handlers log over 25, steps per shift. Standing on concrete warehouse floors takes its toll. Repetition: Performing the same motions hundreds of times per shift can put strain on the back, shoulders, and joints. Ongoing twisting and turning adds wear and tear.
