Earlier this week, UISD sent out a letter to parents saying that students in grades pre-k to eighth grade will need to wear uniforms to school. Parents and community members took it to social media to express their opinions about the return of school uniforms. Overall opinions were divided; some parents were in favor of uniforms while others were against them. In the letter that was sent out to parents, it says uniforms are going to be reimplemented on the first day of school, August 10 for UISD students in elementary and middle school. The discussion to bring back uniforms has been discussed for months with students and parents from all the different campuses. We also had a parent from each school and a student from each school. Students in elementary and middle school will have choices of a collar and sleeved shirts, navy, white and black.

A general list of school year supplies for elementary students is available here. Secondary students will receive information about school supplies from their teachers the first week of school. The dress code is intended to create an atmosphere where maximum teaching and learning can occur. It is the position of the District that there is a positive correlation between student grooming and the learning climate. The District believes that reasonable dress code regulations help to sustain a wholesome learning environment, one that supports the social, emotional and intellectual growth of students, not only while attending District schools, but prepares them for their future endeavors. It is the responsibility of the parents and students to comply with school rules and regulations concerning dress and grooming standards. Any form of dress or grooming that attracts undue attention, is unsafe, disrupts school, is considered gang related, or detracts from the learning process is not acceptable. The administration and faculty shall have the right to appraise any current fashion or fad and determine whether it is appropriate or inappropriate for school wear. Student dress and grooming are expected to be in keeping with accepted community standards. The District also prohibits any clothing or grooming that the principal may reasonably believe will materially and substantially interfere with the operation of the school or cause a material or substantial disruption. Students in violation of the student dress and grooming code will be expected to change to appropriate attire provided by the school or parent or may be subject to other appropriate discipline when violations occur.

Awards and Honors Between Classes

With the start of the new school year comes many changes one of which is the new standardized dress code for students of both districts. Elementary and middle school students from United ISD are required to wear only certain colors in tops and bottoms. Annette Perez the director for discipline management for UISD says the high schools will also have to follow a standardized dress code. As for the high schools, students can wear jeans any day of the week as long as they do not have any tears or holes. On the other hand, if your student attends a Laredo ISD elementary or middle school, they can choose any solid color top or bottom. LISD high school students will also follow a standardized dress code, they can choose any top with sleeves and bottoms with no rips or holes.

Hair must be neat, clean and well groomed. Extreme hairstyles which include hair that is dyed an unnatural color green, orange, etc. Head sweat bands, hair rollers, or long handled combs may not be worn in the hair. Facial hair, while allowed, must be neatly groomed and a natural color High Schools only. No type of head covering, cap or hat is to be worn or brought to school.
