Morikawa's cast in Hajime no Ippo is ripe with genuine character arcs that make the story feel grounded and real. However, in a story filled with boxers surviving overwhelming trials in and out of the ring as they come to terms with their opponents and themselves, the most remarkable redemption arc belongs to a non-boxer. As one of the catalysts for Ippo's boxing career, Masahiko Umezawa's presence in the story is immense. Were it not for Umezawa's ghoulish treatment of Ippo, Ippo would never have entered the boxing world due to his timid nature and genuine commitment to the family business. After discovering Ippo's blossoming boxing career, Umezawa's song changes as he pursues more knowledge and awareness of his former target's new path. However, instead of making amends, Umezawa tries to forget the past and become Ippo's first proper fan. As a former delinquent , Umezawa initially shows more interest in the sport's violence, as he is impressed by Ippo's knockout punches. In time, however, he comes to admire the boxer's tenacity, commitment and passion. Ippo's gradual maturity eventually leaves him more concerned with Ippo's well-being instead of reveling in the brutality of the matches. After graduating to enter the working world, Umezawa matures and gets to know the real Ippo. Realizing that his newfound friend and role model is stretched extremely thin between helping his ailing mother's fishing business and an exhaustive boxing career, he decides to step up. Umezawa connects with Ippo's mother and acts as her surrogate at the boxing matches, as she cannot stand watching her son get hurt.

After a day of school , Umezawa, along with his friends, Takemura and Matsuda catch up to fellow student, Ippo , and began insulting and beating him underneath a bridge. Trying to provoke a reaction from the submissive high-schooler, they are stopped by a jogging Mamoru Takamura , who scared them away by dodging their punches and stealing the buttons off their school uniforms with his impressive footwork. Then one day, as Ippo was going to the Kamogawa gym , Umezawa and his friends messed with Ippo, taking his boxing licence. Umezawa was surprised as Ippo defended himself and took his boxing licence back from him. After Ippo's match with Oda , Umezawa and his friends approached Ippo and asked how he won.
Ippo Makunouchi , helping his mother, Hiroko Makunouchi , with the Makunouchi Fishing Boat , carries several boxes onto the boat and sees everyone off. The next day at school , he is invited to see a movie with some classmates. He is happy to be invited, but declines because he has to help with the store. He then overhears his classmates making fun of him on their way out and heads home saddened. He only gets as far as a nearby bridge when he runs into Masahiko Umezawa and his goons. They begin to beat on Ippo for "making the school stink of worms" and take him under the bridge. Umezawa implies that Ippo's mother must stink too, causing Ippo to glare at him. But when Umezawa glares back, Ippo backs down, infuriating Umezawa more for never showing any backbone. As they continue, Mamoru Takamura suddenly passes by during his roadwork and saves Ippo. Umezawa and his group try to attack him, but he easily dodges their blows and steals their uniform buttons, scaring them away.
