The hull of the X-Wing Starfighter is a lattice of Technic pieces which will eventually be used to hold the wings in place. They then have to be rotated at an angle to emulate the design of the original ship. However, the small pieces that hold the flat pieces to the hull have a terrible habit of coming loose if any pressure is put on them at all, even just repositioning the ship. There are a few moments of structural weakness during the build that make the X-Wing Starfighter feel somewhat unstable until it all comes together. The X-Wing Starfighter itself sits on a black display stand that holds the ship in place without having to use any bricks, meaning you can easily lift it off without having to disconnect it from the black base, then simply reattach. It looks fantastic and there really isn't anything negative to say about it. If we had to, however, then we'd comment on the scale of the ship. Outside of that strange issue, the X-Wing Starfighter is fantastic to look at. With the ship you get a new and highly detailed Luke minifigure in his Rebel pilot gear, and you also get an R2-D2 droid figure.

Moving further back is the cockpit, which features the return of the UCS-scale canopy piece.

Having analysed the set's new moulds, recolours and prints in part 1 , it's time to focus on the minifigures, build techniques and finished model. The set features two minifigures that need no introduction: R2-D2 and Luke Skywalker appropriately dressed in his orange flight suit. A clever trick is used to align the two sides of the fuselage. The protruding 1x2 curved wedges and coffee stirrers nest inside locators in the nose cone as it slides into place on these red Technic axles. The rest of the build is spent on the wings, engines and cannons.

Inside the box are bags numbered from 1 to 10, the instruction manual, plus the cockpit glass and display plaque packaged separately. The instructions come in this flat cardboard box for added protection. The manual has the modern all-white design which does look a bit plain. The two minifigures included are the pilot version of Luke Skywalker, along with his faithful astromech R2-D2. Luke is a brand new minifigure and is the definitive version of Luke in his orange pilot suit so far, featuring detailed arm prints and dual-moulded legs!

The new fuselage is a huge step up from previous iterations and the printed canopy, plaque, and addition of a top-notch Luke Skywalker minifigure are premium upgrades.

A new theme with unique and creative ships would build more value for Lego as something other than another product line OF Disney. I would also pose the question to these designers if they preferred working on this X-wing over working on one of those new themes.
