Uchicago first day of classes
Thoughts on why students should skip class for Yom Kippur:. The primary purpose and function of a University is to get your education, and you ought to maximize every opportunity to do so. Get work done on time, invest of yourself in your studies, keep focused and show up. Or think of it this way: You are here, you might as well get the grades! And there are pressures of all types. All that may be true, but still, people make sacrifices for what is dearest to them. Jews vary in their levels and styles of observance, and not all keep all the holidays the same way. But Yom Kippur is that one holiday that nearly all Jews no matter which movement keep in the way that they observe it so much so that even non-Jews are quite familiar with it. Making it different is what makes it special. Yes, Illinois and other states have laws on the books mandating accommodations and no penalty for absences and even allowances for travel time, among other accommodations for religious observances. And official UChicago policy backs it right up.

During pre-registration, students assign a preference to the classes in which they hope to register for the following quarter. Pre-registration is available 24 hours a day during the designated time frame and students may update classes and rankings as frequently as they choose during this period. Pre-registration is not first-come, first-served; the date, time of day, and order in which students log into the system are irrelevant to the outcome of resolution. There are two class categories: one used for the majority of class offerings that prioritizes fourth-year students over all other academic years 4,3, 2,1 and one used primarily for general education requirements that prioritizes second-years, then first-years, then third-years, then fourth-years 2,1,3,4. A fourth-year student requesting a 4,3,2,1-designated class with their highest priority will have priority over all other students except students with those exact criteria, in which case a random tiebreaker determines who receives the lower numerical value. The resolution process registers students in order of their assigned numerical value per class, meaning that registration is attempted for all student first requests before moving on to second priority requests until no sequenced requests remain to be registered.

The College residential and curricular experience is predicated on the community that students build by attending classes together and by learning from faculty and each other in academic and social settings. We believe that successful education at the college level depends to a large extent on regular attendance at classes and laboratories and therefore it is the expectation of the College that students will attend all classes for which they have registered. Nevertheless, it is up to the individual department, faculty member or instructor, to set the attendance policy for their individual courses. All students enroll in the general education curriculum, designed with the expectation that in the first two years of study a student will complete general education requirements and introductory courses in a major.
