This post is a reflection on my experience through all stages of the co-op process from student to employer. If you are a prospective co-op student from UBC you will likely find a posting or two from my company, xyzdigital each work term at the time of writing Summer openings are filled. How important is the co-op designation as opposed to just stating on your resume that you've worked with your employer for a certain time? The reason I am asking is because I would love to go on co-op but a 16 month commitment means I will have to give up 2 summers, during which I would like to venture other opportunities Is the work term something that is negotiable with your employer? For most science coop programs such as biochem and micb 16 months commitment is required, in fact I am on my micb coop term at work as I type this. I believe Pharmacology is an exception they get to do less. Work terms are not negotiable, you can either do 4 months at 4 different companies or do 8 months and then another 8 months at different companies but must add up to 16 months in the end. I strongly encourage you to apply for coop since its a great opportunity to gain experience in a certain industry or do some research in academic labs and get personal references. I also have a lot of spare time since don't need to study for exams to study for MCAT and do some volunteer work. I am also currently on a co-op term, and I found it to be a great experience.

Co-operative education Co-op integrates the academic education classroom-based learning of interested and qualified students with relevant, supervised, and paid work experience work-based learning with employer organizations. Co-op students gain valuable skills that help guide them through their academic education, as well as prepare them for future job markets upon graduation. Biology Co-op offers a wide variety of placement opportunities for students, ranging from positions relating to cell biology and genetics to ecology and environmental biology. Your work experience takes the form of four four-month work placements at a variety of organizations in Canada and potentially internationally.
