The extended range forecast, which includes the monthly and seasonal forecasts, can at times provide an insight into weather patterns in the months ahead. Week 1 will be largely unsettled with low pressure systems often tracking close to Ireland. A predominantly westerly airflow will steer frontal systems across the country at times, with rainfall amounts expected to be above average for most of the country. Rainfall will be closer to normal in southern coastal areas. Mean temperatures will be around normal, possibly slightly warmer than average in some western coastal areas. There is a trend towards more settled conditions in Week 2 as low pressure weakens and high pressure begins to have more of an influence on our weather. While occasional showers and spells of rain are likely, rainfall amounts will be lower than normal for most of the country. Coastal regions of the west will be the exception, with near average rainfall there. Indications suggest that it will become warmer, with mean temperatures increasing above average nationwide. While there is increased uncertainty in the trend for Week 3, current indications suggest that low pressure to the south of Ireland will establish an easterly airflow over the country. This will bring showers at times, which will result in slightly higher than average rainfall in some areas, particularly on eastern facing coasts. However, rainfall for most of the country will be near normal.

A dry start to this period is most likely in the south of the UK, with some night-time frost and perhaps patchy fog, but rain will already by making its way into northern parts of the UK on Tuesday, spreading south. This sets the scene for a generally unsettled pattern that is likely to continue through to early March. Spells of rain are expected across all areas at times, wettest overall in the west and northwest, where it will also sometimes be windy. Temperatures are most likely to be around or a little above average, though some short-lived colder interludes that would allow sleet or snow to fall to lower levels are possible at times, these more likely in the north. An initial continuation of unsettled conditions is most likely in this period, with low pressure systems continuing to cross west to east over or close to the UK, with mostly short-lived spells of drier and brighter weather between times. Temperatures are likely to be near or slightly above normal overall, with occasional night frosts, but values will fluctuate as weather systems come and go.

The use of ensembles and model consensus helps narrow the error and provide confidence in the forecast. There is a vast variety of end uses for weather forecasts. Forecasts based on temperature and precipitation are important to agriculture, and therefore to traders within commodity markets.
