A few years after the first Fast and the Furious movie came out, streets were flooded with 'rice cakes' in Dhaka. People were installing obnoxious body kits and wings, unnecessary neons, swapping out the muffler for a louder exhaust. Most missed the point of why people tuned their cars in the first place: for more power and better handling, which in turn made cars more fun to drive. The movie also inspired many to jump start a real tuner scene in the country. We saw more and more imports of performance vehicles, and demand for these cars were at an all-time high. The EG and EK Civics, and Integras made great tuners for their low-price points — they still do — but the most sought-after vehicles at the time were the Celica and the RX Between the Celica and the RX-8, the latter is definitely the faster car.

From the November issue of Car and Driver. With its rpm redline, horsepower that peaks just rpm before that, and an aggressive VVTL-i electronically variable valve-timing-and-lift scheme, the 1. Plus, it's backed by a six-speed manual transmission, and the body wrapped around that engine looks as though it were designed with a knife. But the suspension, while generating impressive performance numbers, feels more civilized than aggressive. TRD's aim for its Sportivo suspension kit is to sharpen the chassis of Toyota's edgiest car. Although that constitutes a pretty thorough reconstruction of the suspension, the rest of this TRD Celica is only modestly twisted. TRD claims the improved breathing of the exhaust and intake is worth an additional 14 hp over stock, but it makes no assertions for the body bits beyond claiming that high-schoolers dig them. On the tight Streets of Willow road course, the TRD-modified Celica's turn-in is dramatically better than stock, and when the inevitable understeer arrives, it's modest. Steering effort seems greater than stock, more so than might be expected for a car whose tire contact patch has expanded only 10mm at each corner. That improvement in at-limit behavior doesn't, however, mean that the limits themselves have expanded. Getting the most of the chassis changes on the track probably means adopting beefier rubber than this car's modest upgrade. On the road, there's notably more noise transmitted from the tires into the cabin than stock. That's not surprising, given the harsher springs and harder bushings, and it's just irritating enough that the sound could be maddening during daily commutes. The exhaust system adds to the cacophony, and the change in air filters is, we assume, responsible for the more pronounced octave shift as the VVTL-i variable valve timing kicks in at about rpm.

The Celica name derives from the Latin word coelica meaning heavenly or celestial. In , Toyota coined the term liftback to describe the Celica fastback hatchback , and used the name Liftback GT for the North American market. The first three generations of North American market Celicas were powered by variants of Toyota's R series engine. In August , the car's drive layout was changed from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive , and all-wheel drive turbocharged models were offered from to Variable valve timing came in certain Japanese models starting from December and became standard in all models from the model year. In , the six-cylinder Celica Supra variant was spun off as a separate model, becoming simply the Supra.
The car came with a host of upgrades, including a more powerful engine, an inline four-cylinder 2ZZ-GE. The engine featured the VVTL-i system or "variable valve timing and lift," which helped it produce a more potent bhp. Toyota also gave customers the choice of a push-button-shifted automatic or an upgraded six-speed manual transmission. Toyota's "action package" had a new front bumper and updated rocker panels, and it proved to be a popular improvement. Showing 22 of 22 related listings. LOG IN. Sign up - It's free!
