What is it about the canyons of Los Angeles that they attract artists, musicians, writers, actors and an array of folks representing an astounding variety of spiritual pursuits? How can one explain the remarkable concentration of creative energy — shot through with a general sense of good vibes — emanating from Topanga Canyon and its countercultural cousin Laurel Canyon? Part of it has to be the free time available to the generally well-to-do people living there, enjoying a laid-back lifestyle and geographic isolation from the mellow-harshing realities of modern American life. In the canyon, there is time to write, time to paint, time to take in the short mountain sunsets and think about what it all means. Struggling artists still struggle, even in the Santa Monica Mountains, and even if there are fewer of them now than there were 50 years ago. Then, restless young boomers prowled the canyon, acoustic guitars slung over their backs and psilocybin caps filling their buckskin shoulder bags.

For my birthday this year, my best friend Hayley surprised me with with a secret day of adventure near LA. I barely had time to polish off my cup of green tea when Hayley pulled up to my apartment, full of smiles and a positive , infectious energy. Determined not to spoil the surprise, I obliged with no questions asked. On our drive, I was brimming with excitement, itching to know all the places and activities that were now before us. The moment we stepped out of the car, we were both engulfed in a comfortable, desert air — the temperature of which was perfect for hiking. The trail itself was not particularly strenuous, but filled with above-the-clouds views that took our breath away and desert flowers that radiated hues of red and orange under the Southern California sun. It was a sight that allowed us to be fully in the moment for the entire hike and helped set the tone for the rest of the day to follow.

The park covers 11, acres stretching from Topanga Canyon to Rustic Canyon and down to the Pacific Palisades, all entirely within the City of Los Angeles, making it the largest wildland within major city limits. The park hosts 36 miles of trails and roads. Topanga State Park sits within the cliffs and canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains and boasts great views of open grassland, live oak, and the Pacific Ocean. The park offers excellent opportunities for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The Backbone Trail also passes through the park. In the park you may encounter many geologic formations such as earthquake faults, marine fossils, volcanic intrusions, and various sedimentary formations.

The outdoor seating, a large terraced garden area next to a creek, is replete with sycamore trees, fairy lights, oak trees and buddha statues. During the cooler months, enjoy the interior and its roaring fireplace. The Inn offers plenty of vegan and vegetarian dishes, and the meat they serve is sustainable and raised naturally. Foraging around this reasonably priced vintage clothing shop is like exploring the overstuffed house of a bunch of stylish eccentrics. This unique bookstore adjacent to the Inn of the Seventh Ray sells metaphysical tomes, jewelry, statues, spiritual iconography, crystals, chimes and incense. Hike on one of the many trails to see some of the most beautiful nature in the area — you might even get lucky and see a deer or two. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes and mountain lions. As you drive up the Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica, the shoreline curves around the bay and the mountains tip downward into the sea. Turn right here.
