These entry points must be used to enter the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. You cannot enter the BWCA legally except from these official entry points. Therefore, the entry points into the BWCA surround it, along its edges. Many roads leading to the entry points are forest roads and of packed gravel; some are paved however. It is located on Minnesota State Highway 1 about one mile east of Isabella. The complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its association with New Deal federal relief construction. Of the 21 buildings, 11 are listed as contributing properties to the district. These were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mids and were built of horizontally-laid wood logs, mostly aspen and pine. These buildings consist of dwellings, an office building, storage facilities, and warehouses.
The area is made up of mostly small lakes with easy access from the entry point, which makes it great for beginners and families with young children. It is interesting to see how quickly the woods recovers from pure devastation. You must choose your permit pickup location when reserving your permit. Make sure you double-check hours, availability, etc. You can call the Tofte Ranger Station and if you need to change your pickup location. Only the permit holder or alternate permit holder specified at the time of reservation can pick up the permit, and a photo ID is required. Show up at least a half hour before your permit issuance location closes. You do not want to arrive to find it closed or unable to help!
