On July 16, I woke early to go for routine blood tests. Because I am diabetic these were fasting blood tests so I wasn't alarmed that I felt dizzy and light headed. I managed to shower and dress and sat at the dining room table to wait for my friend who would be driving me to the office to have my blood drawn. When my friend arrived, I began sweating, my vision went double and I felt nauseous. So I staggered to the back porch and began vomiting uncontrollably and the world started spinning.

Riot Games is one of the top game development companies in the world. They were originally best known for their multiplayer online battle arena MOBA League of Legends, though they have expanded heavily outside that single title. On top of their video game titles, Riot Games also maintains two of the leading esports leagues through League of Legends and Valorant. This is where we came in. The merged grouping would drive further competition between teams and bring fans together across multiple continents, branded as the EMEA Masters. To accomplish this, we developed the EMEA website from the ground up , designed and developed two augmented reality filters for use on social media. The final portion was an interactive map that describes the teams within the region, their history, and the major tournaments that exist throughout the EMEA. With Riot Games already possessing strong branding for League of Legends and their esports scene, designing the functionality of the website became much more important. From solid wire framing to focused user journeys, fans can interact and find every piece of content and information easily. Rather than opting for a simple map overlay, we chose a stronger, cleaner, more modern design for the EMEA region. The map itself was kept darker overall with highlight colors to create stronger contrast between the interactive portions and the static portions. Fans can click into each ping to get all the content they want from each set.

Ancient lore has long foretold of four mythical figures, whose origins represent the various forms of a universal gaming experience: tilt. But whether it's frustration or hyperfocus, a desire for justice or a desire to just give up, the spirit of tilt takes many forms. West Studio was pleased to work in collaboration with Riot Games on Tilted Fables , an animated short that spearheads a new initiative aimed at curbing toxic player behavior in the League of Legends community. Under Riot's direction, we created a series of illustrations that were animated into vignettes, featuring four different player personalities as they descended into various states of tilt, or a state of mental or emotional confusion or frustration which causes less-than-optimal strategies and behaviors. But according to Brand Strategist Beckett Snedeker-Short, who led work on the project, he himself was feeling a bit tilted at the outset of the project. After reviewing the script and getting a handle on the direction, we dove right in to breathe life into these cautionary tales.

We all get tilted. But whether it's frustration or hyperfocus, a desire for justice or a desire to just give up, the spirit of tilt takes many forms. Take the test, learn the lore behind the four Tilt Types of myth, and see which one speaks to you. Insults, annoyances, and disappointments are felt deeply and personally. This outspoken tilt type represents feelings passion and frustration in equal measure. Impulsiveness drives them to confront and challenge all external sources of tilt-- no matter the cost. Crackling with a spontaneous, driven energy, the Barbarian favors those who act first and do the deep breathing exercises later; players who feel the need to do something about it when tilted. Whether flipping a table or commiserating with a friend, negative feelings must be given immediate release. To master the Barbarian spirit within, a healthy outlet for venting goes a long way. It thrives by finding constructive releases for pressure experienced from the game and others.

Tilt is part of a daily routine when you're playing League of Legends. Either you, your opponents or your teammates, people that are tilting are commonplace within the Rift. That's perhaps why Riot decided to address this subject in one of their latest videos.
