However, the murder plot thickens when the two lovers turn on each other, claiming the other is the real killer , a shocking turn of events that captured the public's attention. Since so much time has passed since the Haysoms were killed in , the progression of technology has allowed for some new breakthroughs. Additionally, key interviews from investigators, forensics experts, and Jens Soering himself are able to shed light on the Haysom case, namely the fact that neither Jens nor Elizabeth can be trusted. While they were on the run in Europe and Asia, Jens and Elizabeth committed several counts of fraud by writing bad checks under assumed names. This led to the couple making thousands of dollars from their fraudulent activities, but it also piqued the interest of the Metropolitan Police, who eventually arrested the couple in London. While this lesser crime might not seem significant at first, it is actually a major breakthrough for the Haysom murder cases. When the Metropolitan Police arrested Jens and Elizabeth for fraud, they began to investigate the couple more in depth for additional evidence, which included taking their love letters to each other.
