Third ninja war
There have been four Great Ninja Wars in the Naruto universe. In Narutothe ninja villages were the best military asset of each of the Five Great Nations and were created as a way to stop local conflicts and centralize the power, third ninja war. Naruto Uzumaki came from the Hidden Leaf in the Land of Fire, and while the Leaf could be considered the most powerful village in the Naruto universe, third ninja war did not obtain that title without tragic, long-lasting wars.
It took place more than ten years prior to the beginning of the series. Because of a decline in national power, the reign of the Five Great Shinobi Countries was crumbling. Along their borders, skirmishes with smaller nations broke out all the time. The prolonged conflicts gradually spread their flames far and wide, until at last it developed into an all-out war. The conflict turned into an unprecedented war of attrition, tormenting all nations with a shortage of war potential. Not even excluding a great power like Konoha, very young children, some of whom were barely out of the Academy were thrown onto the battlefield, eventually losing their young lives during the war. Konohagakure and Iwagakure fought across Kusagakure after the latter had infiltrated it in order to lay siege to the border of the Land of Fire.

Erupting from small skirmishes between nations, this war engulfed the entire world eventually, with Konohagakure and Iwagakure being at the center of it all. The war broke out more than 10 years prior to the beginning of the Naruto series and eventually ended with a peace treaty being signed by the nations. A great number of shinobi are known to have fought in this war and there are those who made quite a name for themselves on the battlefield. Here are the 10 strongest ninjas in the Third Great Ninja War. Although he was certainly not the strongest on the battlefield, Kakashi was quite powerful already, despite being so young. After receiving the Sharingan from Obito Uchiha, his powers only grew further and earned him the moniker of "Kakashi of the Sharingan". His skills were great enough to deal with most average Jonin with ease, however, him being so young means that he isn't going to climb higher up the list. One of Sunagakure's strongest, Sasori fought quite well in the war and killed so many shinobi that he ended up making a name for himself. Due to the blood of his enemies dying his sand, Sasori came to be known as "Sasori of the Red Sand". Like many other ninjas, the Third Great Ninja War served as a turning point in the life of Sasori as he went on to abduct the Third Kazekage and turn him into one of his puppets. What's more, Sasori defected the village, going rogue for good. Although it isn't clear how strong Danzo Shimura was at this point, being a rival to Hiruzen means he was certainly a Kage level shinobi, at the very least. Danzo gained further power in the Sharingan after the Uchiha clan massacre, however, that happened years after the war. For now, Danzo takes the 8th spot on this list. Famously known as Shisui the Teleporter, Shisui Uchiha was one of the many kids who were forced to go to war in the tumultuous times.
It is easy to see how Shisui Uchiha takes the 7th spot on this list, despite being so young.
The Third Great Shinobi War was the first world war between the hidden villages to have occurred. This war was aggravated by the invasion of the Land of Rain by the shinobi of Iwagakure , hailing from the Land of Rock. They reasoned that insurgents from Amegakure were terrorizing their lands and needed to be controlled to prevent future conflicts. They struck in the middle of the latest civil war, at the time, between the Rain shinobi, thus able to easily overwhelm the pitiful defenses placed to repel the Rock ninja and occupy the country. At first, Konohagakure and its allies allowed this occupation to exist, though they requested to send aid teams in order to assist the wounded. The Land of Rock denied their request, which caused suspicion on the part of the Third Hokage.
During one of these attacks, A fought the Eight-Tails alone, allowing his comrades to escape. Their battle resulted in A receiving a self-inflicted wound to the chest after he collapsed upon his own hand , which became his life's shame. Between these attacks, A held try-outs along with Dodai in order to search for a tag-team partner for his son, which was a long-standing tradition for the Raikage. As the exercise was seemingly going to end in failure again, he lamented the fact that this would have been unnecessary if A had an actual brother. After seeing the dummy's head finally fall off, he looks on at B and his son, glad that they had finally found a suitable candidate. At some point he also mentored Darui , passing the secrets of the Black Lightning technique down to just him. A is a calm and seemingly level-headed person. He is also a very proud and caring individual who will readily use himself as a shield or "go-between" to protect his comrades. This was also exemplified when it was revealed that after he received a scar from fighting the Eight-Tails, not even his son asked him about it in detail, out of his respect for his father's pride. A was also a firm believer of children being destined to surpass their parents, so much so he told his fellow Kage who were reincarnated not to worry about being forced to fight against their fellow shinobi as their children would be able to defeat them.
