In our Video Games section of this site, we have tried to examine the intersection between games and film, mainly covering titles that could be considered "cinematic. After suffering in development hell as a potential feature film for a few years—one that was almost produced by Sam Raimi and almost starred Maisie Williams —"The Last of Us" took a hard right into a different medium, becoming the first HBO video game adaptation as a multi-season probably dramatic series. On Sunday, January 15 th , the nine-episode first season of "The Last of Us" closely follows the first game's action, recently rereleased in a PS5 version retitled "The Last of Us, Part 1," from its heartbreaking prologue through to its perfect ending. It's a fascinating deconstruction of the game that leans on character and storytelling instead of action, and it does so in a way that's confidently grounded. Some of the major set pieces from the game are carried over, but it's more about survival, growth, and hope than killing waves of enemies.

In February, Druckmann confirmed he directed an episode and felt his experience reinforced and reflected his experience in directing games. Canadian artists union IATSE claimed the production led to a 30 percent increase in union membership and employment. Production designer John Paino referenced the video game but focused more on the references used by Naughty Dog during development. He created an image collage which included a photograph of reassembled chairs, which Mazin considered the show's mandate: "the built world is unbuilt and rebuilt". Special features on the Digital version include various featurettes to give fans a look into the behind-the-scenes making and insight of actors, creators, and experts. Starting with The Last of Us: Stranger Than Fiction , is a featurette for people who have been wondering about the likelihood of a fungus creating the post-apocalyptic disaster. The cast and filmmakers speak to experts in survival, microbiology, and parasitology for a discussion on the realities of the invasive fungus and subsequent apocalypse.
That backstory continues to develop in the fifth episode, which includes Lynskey ordering a brutal massacre of suspected informants. See the full list.
The Last of Us sent shockwaves through the video game community when it debuted in Unsurprisingly, this quickly drew Hollywood studios to begin exploring a cinematic adaptation; the game obviously had a large, built-in fan base that would seemingly be interested in seeing a film version. At the time, the film industry considered video game movies to reach the same level of success as recent comic book adaptations. In , Screen Gems formally announced that they would be developing the film. It was a move that made sense, as the studio had also found financial if not critical success with the Resident Evil franchise with director Paul W. The legendary horror maestro Sam Raimi was brought in to produce the film alongside Ghost House Pictures. Additionally, Raimi was known for his ability to craft a strong blend of practical and visual effects, and would be able to retain the integrity of the aesthetic that had made The Last of Us so realistic.
