Last Castle is as famous for its location as its delicious food. Perched atop the entrance to Avakas Gorge, if you want to dine in style there are few places better in Paphos. Viklari, The Last Castle in Cyprus is not just a meal, it is an experience. Driving to Viklari, The Last Castle restaurant is like entering another world. The trip to the restaurant requires driving off road through an almost desert landscape, down into a gorge on a U-shaped road barely wide enough to hold two cars and then up a hill along a sand stone cliff, all of which is either incredibly terrifying or thrilling. All along the way the sea is visible; its bright turquoise waters shimmering in the afternoon sunlight. The Last Castle ruins are perched on top of a hill, overlooking a deep gorge and the sea. Once atop the hill the large open space leading to the restaurant is divided into an organic garden supplying the restaurant with its fresh ingredients, and a parking lot. Until this point the restaurant seems a mystery. A walkway with relics from the castle, potted plants, partially ruined walls and funky cactus leads you to the restaurant. As the walkway ends the beautiful restaurant opens up before you, drawing your eye to the amazing turquoise sea. Then, you look up to the beautiful grapevines, full of luscious green grapes, which serves as the only roof for the restaurant. The large open space has no walls, except for the one ruined one remaining from the castle. The tables are made from massive stone slabs with a mixture of chairs. Every day there is the same menu: rotisserie chicken or pork with salad and fries. For veggies there is a different dish every day.

If you want to sample the Viklari and taste traditional Cyprus food in an amazing location, be warned that you really need the last castle paphos 4x4 to get there as the track that leads up to the taverna and the Avakas Gorge, which is beneath it, is extremely rough. Cypriot Tavernas.

Viklari - the Last Castle. Cypriots love grilled and barbequed meat and pork souvla is synonymous with outdoor summer cooking here in Cyprus. In the searing heat of July and August, you will be tempted by the mounthwatering aroma wafting from a barbecue, packed wth sizzling chunks of pork, chicken or sometimes lamb. The Last Castle serves the best souvla I have tasted anywhere on the island. You may think it's easy to cook pork by slapping a skewer packed with chunks of meat ono a BBQ, but believe me, if it's not done properly with the correct amount of coals, at the right height and for the right amount of time, you can end up with dry and burnt or conversely undercooked meat. At the Viklari, the menu is simple - BBQ pork or chicken served with a bowl of salad and giant potato wedges or baked potatoes for the health conscious.

Do you want to see a really cool place for lunch? Well known by all locals for great food and even better views, this secret hot spot is a short drive away in Akamas Peninsula. The vines provide a lovely shade and reflect like a disco ball a beautiful mosaic on the floor. When we were there, the grapes were just getting ripe and the vine provided nice shelter from the midday heat. We called a day earlier and booked a big table with a view — a must if you want to make it there for lunch in summer, this place gets really busy even on weekdays. This is no place for picky eaters — the restaurant only serves one menu and lunch only, you choose either chicken or pork or mixed. The food is good quality, I would say even better than you get in most restaurants in Paphos especially in the harbour area. The salad is rather simple but very fresh.
