It follows a mother and daughter who, after having to quarantine together during COVID , are forced to confront their personal obstacles and relationship tensions. The film had its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 6, , and was theatrically released in Taiwan on October 29, , by Sony Pictures. It received widespread critical acclaim and was selected as the Taiwanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards , but it was not nominated. Her mother, Pin-wen, is asked by her company to take a leave of absence. Confined together, the already thorny mother-daughter relationship becomes strained. After several strange episodes, Pin-wen is hospitalized and diagnosed with a psychotic disorder. Only then does Xiao Jing realize her mother is truly ill.
