Spoiler Warning: Guy Ritchie's The Covenant With the world still reeling from the ongoing effects of the war in Ukraine, and so many other devastating conflicts around the world still in recent memory, war films currently seem to have more poignancy than ever before. The highly acclaimed director and writer Guy Ritchie recently threw his filmmaking hat into this arena with his war drama, Guy Ricthie's The Covenant. For many reasons, the film is a superb one that captures many of the grittier and humanistic sides of war than most films in the genre have the depth to properly explore. This isn't unsurprising for a Guy Ritchie film since the director has gained a stellar reputation for the brilliance of his previous films. Given the subject of The Covenant, and the fearless way that it tackled some very complex material, the film also has many people wondering if it is based on a true story. The short answer is no, but there's a lot more subtlety for why it's a question that pops up so often once people see the film.

The revolution led by the Covenanters against to royal rule of the Church in Scotland started with the symbolical revolt of a woman, Jenny Geddes, in What followed seemed to have been the deed of men. This paper proposes to rehabilitate the place of women in the history of the covenant cause in the 17th century. It presents some of their actions in order to assess their impact on the covenanting revolution, showing that some of these women were even raised to the status of martyrs. It also demonstrates the importance of their role in the maintaining of what they believed to be the Presbyterian national values of Scottish Society, proving it was both a symbolical and a genuine driving-force in the revolutionary movement and resistance of the Kirk which believed it was threatened by the policy of uniformity of the British Stuarts. The relationship between a soldier and their interpreter, like John Kinley and Ahmed at the center of The Covenant , is a strong and unique one, bearing a striking resemblance to the kind forged during the war in Afghanistan, and raising questions as to how closely the movie is based on a real story. The film follows Sergeant John Kinley Jake Gyllenhaal whose work with Afghan interpreter Ahmed Dar Salim takes them into dangerous situations in hostile enemy territory. When Sergeant Kinley is wounded in a skirmish with the Taliban at an IED factory, Ahmed risks his life to make sure that he gets back to the base and home safely. After recovering, a guilt-ridden Sergeant Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family are being hunted, with any aid tied up in the bureaucracy of the US military, forcing him to take matters into his own hands. He returns to Afghanistan as a one-man army, using all of his military skills and resources in an unsanctioned rescue mission. Knowing that the United States military has gone back on its word providing Ahmed and his family a visa to escape the war-torn country, Sergeant Kinley makes a vow to honor that promise, and John Kinley and Ahmed work to protect each other at all costs in The Covenant. Though it's taken from real events, The Covenant and its ending isn't based on a true story, but rather the collective experiences of hundreds of interpreters and soldiers during the war in Afghanistan.
