Suttons bulbs
Suttons Seeds is a long established supplier of seeds , bulbs , and other horticultural products. Originally the company traded as corn merchants and were known as the 'House of Sutton'. In , the business moved to Reading's Market Place, where the sons persuaded their father to expand into the flower and vegetable seed trade. From this time on the firm progressed and expanded rapidly, earning a reputation for supplying pure, unadulterated seed. The Market Place shop occupied a prominent position overlooking the Saturday vegetable and general market. Martin Hope acquired nursery grounds in Queens Road along with a greenhouse. By mid he began selling greenhouse plants, many of the bulbs coming from local nurseries, but some from the Netherlands. Suttons established their own laboratory to test seeds for germination and purity in In the same year, the company became one of the first to take advantage of the opening of the Great Western Railway through Reading. The railway was responsible both for bringing in large consignments of seeds and bulbs, and for carrying outgoing mail orders to all parts of the country. A branch was established in Calcutta , India in , making it one of earliest seed companies in India after Pune based Pestonjee P. Suttons received royal patronage in , when Queen Victoria requested Martin Hope Sutton to supply seeds to the royal household. In , extensive new offices and warehouses replaced the original premises, albeit still fronting Market Place. These occupied a considerable part of central Reading, stretching back apremises included offices, different store rooms for various seeds and bulbs, an exhibition department, stables and even a works fire station.

Spring flowering bulbs provide lots of interest and spectacle during the period before your perennial plants come through. To make sure you get the best from your bulbs, it pays to plan well in advance, getting them into the ground during the autumn so that you can look forward to your garden erupting with colour come the spring. Autumn is the best time to plant your bulbs.
Herald the beginning of warmer weather and longer days with a glorious display of spring flowering bulbs. With a little planning, you can even enjoy flowers from January right through to the end of spring — a welcome splash of scent and colour when not much else is flowering. Versatile and low maintenance, spring flowering bulbs will happily grow in containers, borders, through grass and under trees. Plant your spring flowering bulbs in autumn ready for flowers the following spring. Daffodils can be planted as early as August but tulips need low temperatures to flower properly, so are best planted no earlier than November. Ensure you plant your bulbs before the first frosts set in. Plant your spring flowering bulbs in well-drained, humus- rich soil, in a sunny spot. Avoid waterlogged soil or areas of deep shade. When planting directly outdoors, group your bulbs together in groups of at least 6 to make a better display. Bulbs will thrive in well drained pots and containers too.
