One of the big stories going into this SummerSlam revolved around Jeff Hardy. I remember thinking at the time that Hardy would probably take a break until the end of the year and then come back to WWE on fire in early for a big match at WrestleMania. He signed with TNA instead. Easy money for them, really. In terms of PPV buyrates , this show did poorly compared to the years before it. I think was one of the worst years in WWE in terms of on-camera product, especially on Raw. Smackdown was pretty good for most of the year. I wrote this in The opening video package listed some of the matches that were going to take place, but then Shawn Michaels and Triple H interrupted with some tomfoolery including shadow puppets that DX loved to do. Shawn and Hunter broke the video. Shawn said he had a gig as a TV repairman, so then the video continued with DX clips.

The event took place on August 11, , at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto , Ontario , Canada , and was the second SummerSlam held at this venue after the event and the first held outside of New York since It featured wrestlers from the Raw , SmackDown , and Live brand divisions. The event comprised 12 matches, including three on the Kickoff pre-show, that resulted from scripted storylines, in which wrestlers portrayed heroes , villains , or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches. Despite Shane's attempts to ban Owens from SmackDown , Owens would nevertheless show up and attack Shane at opportune moments. Kingston referenced their past rivalry in where Kingston defeated Orton, but claimed that Orton used his influence to keep Kingston out of the main event scene. Orton stated that he was right that he held Kingston back and accepted the challenge. Following the Superstar Shake-up in April, Bray Wyatt , who had been on hiatus since the previous summer, began appearing as an eerie children's entertainer in pre-taped segments called Firefly Fun Fouse.
