When you think about the Studebakers, it's probably because saw the introduction of Studebaker's first V-8, and not because of the evolutionary changes made for the second and final year of the bullet nose front end. Studebaker was famously cautious about the bullet nose, and like many people with a prominent schnozz, made an effort to reduce its impact in the second year of sales. The formerly discreet grille openings evolved into a broad, two-piece smile with bright horizontal bars underneath, and a subtle, body-color painted steel splash apron filled in the space between the bumper and the front-end sheetmetal. The grilles are each held on with seven Phillips screws, and when removed, there's enough space behind them to "stick your head in the opening," said legendary Studebaker drag racer Ted Harbit. The bullet was less obviously aeronautical than the year before, and no longer bracketed by chrome wings. Studebaker replaced them with extra-wide cutlines for the front of the hood, highlighted with "Studebaker" script on the passenger side, and the model name on the left, "Commander" as on John Garofal's Starlight Coupe. John, of Lord's Valley, Pennsylvania, recently inherited the car from his father Jack, well known for his cars around Rhinebeck, New York.

The s and s was a time of many technological advancements, especially in the automotive industry. That era saw wars and growth of space age with reports of UFOs and aliens, which in turn naturally stimulated the minds of creative automotive enthusiasts everywhere. The Manta Ray was inspired by space travel, science fiction and art from the culture of the time. This concept car was the brainchild of aircraft designers, Glenn Hire and Vernon Antoine. Both Hire and Antione worked in aircraft design at North American at the time, and they had a vision of a fighter jet-like automotive design, so they purchased a Studebaker Commander to serve as the foundation for their new space age concept car they decided to call the Manta Ray. They stripped down the stock body design and added a three-seater roadster body made of fiberglass. Hire and Antoine then began adding designs of the jet-age. Next, they added a triple tail lamp feature which they borrowed from the Lincoln design. They kept the Studebaker cu. V-8 engine and the Studebaker chassis, but they did chop off some 3 inches from the frame rails in their design.
The production idea did not go beyond the plan to circulate the car, and it was never cultivated for mass production. It's Up For Auction!

As you can see, this one is probably more a wall hanger than anything else. There are no cracks in it. The outer ring is dent free but the center bullet has a ding. As you can also see, someone driiled a hole in the end and had a propeller on it. There are some larger pits in it. I assume it could be replated. He tried the four bolts holding in the center and they all turn thus it can be taken apart these bolts often break due to rusted bolts.
