Concept art developed decades ago finds its way into new media, as the press of new Star Wars movies and television shows require more and more new spaceships, aliens, and planets. With being the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back , now is a good time to look back at where some of the most iconic scenes, characters, and spacecraft came from. Here are ten pieces of The Empire Strikes Back concept art that fans need to see. An enormous amount of work went into imagining new worlds the film could present, including Hoth. Hoth being an ice planet always seems to have been the plan, but in this painting by the legendary Ralph McQuarrie, there might have been some variance. The final film version would lose the colorful numbers on the helmet, though this particular design would eventually find use as the snow gear of Phase 1 Clone Troopers in the first season of the Clone Wars animated series , worn by Captain Rex and the st.
