With that in mind, I was keen to see if the Spinifex Xscape has all it needs to turn any adventurous journey into a wonderful memory. From the ground up, it certainly has the stuff that a would-be caravanner should expect from a van that will take them to many of the far-flung corners of the continent. Sometimes you just want to get away to a quiet little spot where the rest of the world can just roll by. You know the sort of place — your own slice of heaven where you just get to be happy with someone special where nobody and nothing can bother you. With that in mind, we picked up the high-end Spinifex Caravans Nomadix Premier and took it to a nice and easy spot within the lulling sound and sight of sleepy Pumicestone Passage, whose tide rolls lazily between the Sunshine Coast and Bribie Island, just north of Brisbane. This particular van had already been purchased by a happy buyer, who was waiting to collect their rig, so a rough-and-tumble trial was not on offer. However, we still poked around the outside to see what would make this impressive off-roader worth considering. First up, the Nomadix Premier range is available in sizes between about 4m and 8m. There are probably just a handful or so of true, large off-road Australian caravan brands — those designed and built from the outset to cope with really hard Outback conditions and long-term living. Like the majority of large Queensland-built off-road caravans, Spinifex employs insulated interlocking aluminium wall framing rather than timber, with smooth external one-piece fibreglass reinforced exterior wall panels, a fully-insulated one-piece fibreglass composite floor and a one-piece fibreglass roof.

The all-electric Electrex lives up to its name — there is no gas and a massive power supply which gives this offroader remarkable self-sufficiency. Spinifex Caravans is one of the big guns to come out of Queensland, producing serious, extreme offroad, all terrain caravans that are custom built in the true sense of the word. The Electrex Premier is a gasless van. While other entrants make the same claim, the Spinifex has no gas fitted whatsoever — the barbecue is electric, water is heated by diesel. The Spinifex is an extreme offroad, all terrain caravan designed to go off-grid and stay there almost indefinitely. There is no gas fitted so the Electrex is true to its name. This system has enough solar-generated power to run domestic appliances effectively for days. So out in the bush in the middle of summer you can sleep with the air conditioning running all night, wake up in the morning, flick on the kettle and pop some bread in the toaster — these creature comforts of home are not a problem for the Spinifex.
