Discman was Sony 's brand name for portable CD players. The first Discman, the Sony D or D-5 depending on region , was launched in The brand name changed to CD Walkman , initially for Japanese lineups launched between October and March , [1] and then entirely in Discman and CD Walkman players are no longer produced. Prior to the development of the Compact Disc , cassette tapes were the dominant form of audio storage in the then-fledgling portable audio industry. In Sony introduced the Walkman in Japan. Sony improved the design of the CDP CD player which was launched in , reducing the power consumption and the number of parts needed and making it smaller.

Sony's original D 'Compact Disc Compact Player', released in late , was the first practical portable to reach consumers. Fast forward two years and the industry's other big players had come up with personal models of their own, some of which made the D look outdated. Battery Included While the player's MkII moniker suggested a mild update, in fact almost everything about this second-gen D was new. Size and convenience of use were both targeted in the new design, with improvements in miniature electronic components and battery technology both contributing to the appeal of this latest offering. Without having the market to itself, as was the case with the original when released, the D MkII would never have the impact of its predecessor. However, it represented an important step when it came to the process of transforming the portable CD player from an exotic trinket into a useful everyday object. It was also the first model to bear the now iconic name 'Discman', a word that would soon become ubiquitous for describing Sony's portable players. The size reduction between the old and new models does not seem that striking at first, but on closer inspection one realises that the D MkII includes beneath it a BP rechargeable battery pack.
