Oddly enough perhaps Zhang Yimou's goofiest film which would seem especially jarring for a war film that wasn't trying to be comedic, but in its sheer sentimentality and commitment to sacrificing for the cause makes it, even more oddly, moving by the end; it does so by abandoning all notions of celebrating individuals, instead making everyone who was a part of it a hero worth remembering by giving equal weight to each and every countryman. Not exactly unique in this regard, but surprisingly rare to see when it comes to the genre and prescribes a greater importance to the ordeal in recognizing it as composite.
