Aetherium is a rare, blue luminescent crystal found in Dwemer city ruins, skyrim aetherium. It was originally discovered by the Dwemer miners in Blackreach. It possesses magical qualities, though it is almost impossible to make anything out of, without the proper tools. The only known way of working with the material skyrim aetherium by using the Aetherium Forgean ancient Dwemer forge located deep below Bthalft.
Aetherium is an incredibly rare, luminescent blue crystal found deep underground. The crystal has a strong magical aura, but it is alchemically inert and harmonically volatile, and no known conventional process can enchant, smelt, mold, bind, or break it. It was discovered by the Dwemer of Skyrim in their deepest mines some time in the First Era. Other materials such as Malachite , Ebony and Sapphire are also used. Crowns, shields and staffs can all be crafted with Aetherium.

The Aetherium Forge is an ancient Dwemer forge, guarded by several Dwarven automatons. Access is gained during the quest Lost to the Ages via the Ruins of Bthalft. After defeating some lesser Dwarven automatons, you will encounter The Forgemaster , a unique Dwarven centurion that has a Flame Cloak-like power and shoots flames or a fireball instead of steam. After defeating it, you can obtain extra materials in a nearby chest to use at the Aetherium Forge. There are three different items that you could create, but you can only use the forge once. You enter via a lift down from the Ruins of Bthalft; at the bottom, before activating a lever to the right of the gate to open it, turn to your right and jump over a low wall. Follow the wall around to the right to find a Dwemer chest with an apprentice-level lock. Past the gate, in front of you is a stone pool of water with a piece of Dwemer scrap metal on the edge of the pool. As you follow the path down several flights of stairs, braziers will light your way. After you descend the third set of stairs, you will face the start of a rock bridge, while to the left, a path leads down to the water. Heading due south from the bottom of the ramp and staying against the wall at the bottom, underwater lies an unlootable skeleton with a Dwarven sword and an empty random soul gem nearby. Also, behind the waterfall to the west is an alcove above the water with an adept-locked chest.

The quest details the investigation of a lost ancient Dwemer secret and the search for four pieces of solid Aetherium. It can be started by locating and reading a copy of the book The Aetherium Wars. It can also be started by entering Arkngthamz and talking to Katria , skipping directly to the second part of the quest. In Arkngthamz, I met Katria, the ghost of an adventurer who perished there. She offered to join me in my fight to the summit, and I accepted her help. Upon arriving at Arkngthamz, the earth will quiver, followed by a disembodied voice that can be heard warning the Dragonborn to turn back. When continuing through the ruin, the disembodied voice will be given a name — a female Nord named Katria who will reveal that she is on the quest to find the mythical Aetherium Forge.
