It began innocently enough. I helped a friend set up a Skype account and phone number. All seemed to go well—until we tested out the phone number. I dialed the number from my landline phone and kept getting a busy signal. Trying to figure out the ultimate cause of this frustrating symptom led us down a dark tunnel that, at times, seemed to have no light at the end. The proximate cause of the busy signal was easy to locate. Apparently, when such calls are blocked, the caller gets a busy signal. I would have appreciated if Skype provided more feedback when a call was blocked, but at least we now knew what needed to be done. Or so we thought. Our next test call went through.

The third time I did so, I got it right and calls have been coming through ever since. The phone line is always busy.

If you're not receiving calls to your Skype Number, make sure that Skype is running, and you are signed in. If you are not signed into Skype, the call will either ring busy or be redirected to voicemail according to your Voice Messaging preferences.
