In the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.

Can anyone say that the weak do not suffer more than the strong? Nevertheless, like all of his movies, Scorsese retains a bevy of cinematic and literary allusions while crafting a defiantly personal work that only serves to cement his status as one of the iconoclastic artists in the last half century. Much as he did with The Last Temptation of Christ , Scorsese is confronting complex questions regarding ethics, belief, and for whom or what we commit ourselves to, even or perhaps I should say especially in the face of death. The whereabouts of the priest who, rumor has it, has recanted his faith, becomes secondary to the Japanese villagers who approach the priests in secret, relieved to have the presence of Christianity return to their borders. It is here where the young priest Rodrigues Andrew Garfield in particular faces a crisis in how best to guide these people so clearly devoid of hope. It is this complex approach to morality that gives the film much of its power, and this indeed extends to the characterizations given to the cast. Perhaps the most interesting arc of the film belongs to the exiled Japanese guide of the priests who left his country after committing apostasy in front of his family who was summarily executed in front of him, though to divulge in more details pertaining to Kichijiro would deprive the film some of its impact.

The most astonishing feats of cinematography are also sometimes among the least flashy, essentially the result of putting technical skills to work in the service of synesthesia. Science and numbers are enlisted in the service of color, light, feeling. How do you convey, for example, the very texture of the air? In 17th century rural Japan, no less? Every director wants a hit—it buys him or her, among other things, a bit of leverage and freedom in terms of what gets made next—and in , Scorsese had one. The time was right, finally, for Silence.

Some time ago, he went to Japan, to minister to thousands of Christian believers; word has now come, however, that he has apostasized—forsaken the faith that bore him to that country in the first place. A gruesome prelude, set in and unveiled at the start of the film, gives some clue as to why this dismaying hearsay might be true. We watch Ferreira on his knees, at the limits of his fortitude, looking on as a group of his fellow-priests are tortured by their Japanese oppressors. Each priest, clad only in a loincloth, is tied to posts, while water from a natural spring, hot enough to boil the skin, is ladled over him; holes in the ladle produce a fine rain, prolonging the torment. Such is the chastisement—a true Imitatio Christi , an emulation of Christ, even of his suffering on the cross—that awaits you, as a Christian in the Japan of that period, when you refuse to renounce your beliefs. The Christian communities that they come across are poor and petrified, worshipping in secret, often after dark: shades of the catacombs, where believers used to meet in the earliest days of the faith. That echo of antiquity is deepened, in cruel fashion, when one of the young priests is betrayed, for a bagful of silver.

If there's anything I can leave you with from this review to help you decide as to whether it's a worthy watch or not, let me just say this: 'Silence' isn't a piece of entertainment, it's instead an experience; and whilst a technically masterful one at that, many audience members may find themselves slowly drifting off to sleep - as my neighbour in the cinema did. Like its subjects, Silence often stumbles as it strives to touch eternal truths, occasionally testing our patience. What little music there is remains as distant as the voice of God, drowned out by sotto voce conversations or the distant peal of a chapel bell.
