Shockwave is a Decepticon lead scientist and tends to be "logical" with his reasons, choices, or with his own experiments. Shockwave had created ancient incredible Cybertronian technology that was found to be very useful against the Autobots. He is a skilled fighter, which he used in self-defense against anyone who dare to attack and kill him. Shockwave is responsible for many scientific endeavors, such as Space Bridges, the Dinobots , resurrection of the Predacons , construction of the Omega Lock 2.

Shockwave is the best Decepticon scientist with deadly efficiency and one of the three tertiary antagonists of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. He was also one of the deadliest Decepticon assassins that Megatron has at his disposal. He was said by some to be the only Decepticon who could defeat Megatron in combat. Shockwave is a killing machine like few others, one of the very few who could rival Megatron, and quite popular amongst the Decepticons. In a way, some respect him enough to willingly work with him, while others idolize him to the point of avenging his death. Nevertheless, Shockwave is ready and willing to destroy whichever Autobots dare stand in his way with his arm-mounted AstroMag Cannon. He was known to transform into a Cybertronian Tank. Eons after the Dynasty of Primes were vanquished, Cybertron fell into dark times. The AllSpark had been buried somewhere within Cybertron and been dismissed as a legend, and the planet itself lacked a star to orbit. As energy became more and more scarce, Cybertronians segregated into tribes. Shockwave chose to rally behind Sentinel Prime, who claimed to be descended from Primus himself. However, he faced opposition from the non-believer Thetacons, and Shockwave joined Megatron, Optimus, and several others in repelling their attacks. Ultimately, Sentinel Prime won the day, as he and Wheeljack were successful in locating the lost AllSpark and harnessing a new sun to orbit.

Serving as Megatron's "pet mad scientist" and second-in-command , he saw to the fighter's armament during his rise to prominence, all the while fantasizing on the prospect of mass producing such warriors. Thankfully, Megatron's more practical nature reined in Shockwave as the movement which became the Decepticons finally moved out of the shadows. Shockwave naturally only serves his one true master: logic. He's willing to ignore petty squabbles and jabs at him, and will only do what he finds logical.

Brothers' Burden Ultra Magnus refused the order outright and Shockwave's plans were now meeting resistance on multiple fronts, with the Autobot's insubordination and the captive Alpha Trion's continued resistance to his probing. Computron was defeated, but the Autobots managed to escape Cybertron, and in the aftermath Shockwave offered his congratulations to Megatron on what seemed an incomplete victory. Having taking Cliffjumper prisoner, Shockwave designed an experiment to use the Dark Spark to remove the Autobots' will to fight. He fights alongside Megatron , Soundwave , and Starscream. Shockwave worked with his Insecticon swarms and also was responsible for creating the Dinobots. Megatron argued that his aggressive leadership was superior to Shockwave's hesitant and slow action.
With the upcoming release of the new Transformers series, the franchise has dropped a bombshell in its connected Energon Universe title Void Rivals , bringing back a major Decepticon villain from the G1 era.
Mobilizing the planet's Autobots, Prime led an attack on Shockwave's Tower. He found that some of the bricks possessed a unique energon signature, which led him to discover a mysterious underwater pyramid in the Gulf of Mexico which had somehow absorbed energon raditation from the crash of the Ark and Nemesis. When they returned to the final vault after unsealing it, the Decepticons found that Sideswipe and Ironhide had already claimed the Dark Spark and fled. When the Decepticons captured Trypticon Station, Shockwave oversaw two of Starscream's scientists ingest Dark Energon : the powerful result activated a security gyro-inhibitor charge which rendered Shockwave unconscious.
